Task description

This is a group assignment that will be delivered during a workshop.

It consists of a 10 minute oral presentation using no more than three (3) power point slides.

The aim of this Group Presentation is to demonstrate your ability to work in a small team to apply key organisational behaviour theories to a real-world organisational problem/opportunity of the team's own choice.

To complete this assignment:

  1. Review the key concepts/theories from the first five lectures: (1) individual behaviour, personality, and values, (2) emotions, attitudes, and stress, (3) motivation, (4) decision making and creativity, and (5) groups and teams.
  2. Discuss a current real-world organisational issue with your learning team (formed in week one) and prepare a 10 minute presentation covering the following:
  3. The organization and its problem/opportunity.
  4. A brief summary of the key issues using two or more concepts/theories from the first five lectures.
  5. Recommendations, based on your chosen concepts/theories, to address these key issues.
  6. Please select an organisation and problem/opportunity that has recently appeared in the media (i.e., within the last three-months).
  7. Further information for this assignment will be provided during the lecture immediately prior to the workshop.
  8. This is a group assignment and will be presented during the workshop. All learning team members must contribute toward the group presentation.

Please Note: The presentation will be recorded for marking purposes.

Criteria & Marking

Self and Peer Review Process:

  • Group members are expected to contribute equally, fulfilling the tasks agreed on early in the semester. If there are disagreements in relation to team members' contributions that cannot be resolved, students must bring the problem to the attention of the Course Coordinator/Tutor as early as possible.
  • Students will be required to complete a Self and Peer Review Evaluation, reflecting on their own and their member's contributions during the development of the group assessment items. A student's final grade for this assessment item could be altered based on feedback from the Peer evaluations.
  • Team members that work in good faith will not experience grade adjustments, while individuals that perform below expectations or fail to pull their weight will experience a negative grade adjustment. The Course Coordinator reserves the right to adjust peer evaluations to ensure fairness.
  • Students are advised to be proactive and make expectations of one another clear from the start. Poor communication is often the source of discrepancies.
  • It is expected that any problems that arise will be brought to the Course Coordinator's attention well before the assessment submission deadlines.

This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Criteria & Marking:

For detailed marking criteria and rubrics, please see the Blackboard site.

Learning resources

You'll need the following resources to successfully complete the course. We've indicated below if you need a personal copy of the reading materials or your own item.

Library resources

Find the required and recommended resources for this course on the UQ Library website.

Additional learning resources information

Learn.UQ (Blackboard): Access course content, communications, and assessments using the UQ Learning Management System, Blackboard Learn. You can use PC or Mac or Mobile (Apps) environment.

Not all of the materials that will be presented in the seminar are covered in the required textbook. This is because no one book contains all of the relevant theories, concepts, and research surrounding management of people.

You are encouraged to read beyond the textbook and prescribed readings for the course, and this will be necessary for the completion of individual and group assignments. The independent learning approach used inᅠthis course will require students to read ahead in the reading schedules, and to use theories and/or concepts that will be relevant in their assignments. You should familiarise yourself with the relevant journals in this field of study. Students should refer to journals contained in the ABDC list, provided on the course BlackBoard site.

Citation style: An important part of academic work is to acknowledge the work of others. To do this, you will need to reference academic journals, books, book chapters and other kinds of reference works using the AMJ referencing style (library guide here: https://guides.library.uq.edu.au/referencing/amj)
