Employee and organisational development underlies the ability of an organisation to adapt, compete and ultimately survive. This course deals with a range of theoretical and practical issues fundamental to leading the development of people and organisations. Topics include learning theory, workplace learning systems and e-learning, career management, process consultation, systems theory, 6 Sigma, action learning, appreciative inquiry, and measuring the return on investment (ROI) of development activities.
This course addresses two key elements within the domain of strategic human resource management (SHRM) - employee development and organisational development.
'Employee development is concerned with the holistic growth of individuals in work and non-work roles as well as learning, adapting and handling the organisation's culture, policies and procedures.' (Hartel, Fujimoto, Strybosch & Fitzpatrick, 2007. Human resource management: Transforming theory into innovative practice. Sydney: Pearson Prentice Hall p315).
'Organisational Development is a system wide application of behavioural science knowledge to the planned development and reinforcement of organisational strategies, structures and processes for improving an organisations effectiveness.' (Wadell, Cummings & Worley, 2011. Organisational Change: Development & transformation 4th Ed. Melbourne: Cengage Learning. p4).
Learning is crucial to both disciplines - intentional, planned, continuous, effective learning. This subject also provides knowledge and skills to think differently and to act differently about human development, organisational challenges and organisational change.
While this subject does go beyond merely discussing toolkits, it still does provide sound, evidence-based strategies to 'do' employee development (ED) and organisation development (OD). This subject is problem-based and solution-focussed, based upon the latest advances in social and organisation science.
This course uses a "flipped classroom" instructional design such that students do pre-work and spend the class time applying pre-work learning. The Online Course (Blackboard) is the pre-work.
