The aim of this course is to provide students with the fundamental mindset, critical thinking skills, and competencies associated with positive performance enhancing staffing practices and work design in a complex, dynamic world. This course provides essential learning for line managers, those who wish to pursue a career in Human Resource Management, and anyone who wants to know how to make their organisation world class in talent management and workplace integration and engagement.

Welcome to MGTS7612, The Fundamentals of Designing and Staffing Organisations.

This course addresses the different ways an organisation works with people, through a range of employment arrangements, to execute its aims or business objectives. The course takes a holistic perspective on staffing the organisation, covering the design of organisation structures and taking a talent pipeline approach to examine how business needs are matched to individual skills and experience to source, attract, select and appoint the right people to the right roles. The latest research in business ethics and positive and strengths-based approaches to HRM underpins the course.

Students will learn about organisation design, the job analysis process, identifying key selection criteria, employment types and options (e.g., including contracting and outsourcing), developing position descriptions, identifying an employment value proposition to attract the right talent, writing job ads, short-listing processes, selection processes and induction. We will also consider the range of circumstances where staffing processes are needed, such as business expansion, responding to strategic change and restructuring. Legal and ethical considerations (e.g., equity, diversity, wellbeing) will be addressed for each area. A major focus will be equipping you to apply academic evidence to your practice as an HR professional or as a line manager.

Task description

AS A TEAM you will complete a portfolio of activities from Week 3 to Week 8 that will help you to prepare a Position Description and develop a recruitment and selection strategy for an assigned role. On 30th September, your team will submit the output of your activities including a recording of a 15 minute presentation of your recruitment & selection strategy, your Position Description and presentation materials, including your reference list.

The other aspect of this assignment is the opportunity for you to further develop your teamwork skills. As is common in the workplace, you will be working in a geographically distributed team that may also be culturally diverse. Your contribution to the effectiveness of your team will also be evaluated using a team Peer Assessment. This may also be used to moderate the overall assignment marks if warranted.

Team formation will begin in Week 1 and must be completed by the end of Week 2. You can self-nominate to a group and you are free to form a group with friends or previous classmates. Assistance will be provided for you to get to know each other to aid this process. Each team will have a Blackboard group with tools to support your collaboration and allow submission of your assessment items and an assigned facilitator to assist with your learning process. If there are any changes in the membership of your team, or significant issues that you need help with, please get in touch with your facilitator immediately.

This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). Task description

INDIVIDUALLY, you will select a job that interests you, and where you can speak to someone who holds that job. This job should be different from the assigned role for your group assignment. You will then develop a complete position description and design an evidence-based recruitment and selection strategy to fill a single vacancy in this role.

In this assignment, you will take on the role of an HR consultant reporting to me, as the CEO of our MGTS7612 consulting business. Consider that a client has requested our company to recruit and select a candidate for the role you have chosen to work on. This will give you hands-on experience in the design of recruitment and selection strategies and further develop your professional communication skills by your delivery of a detailed report.  Following these steps will help you to deliver a high-quality outcome.

1. Choose your role, within the guidelines discussed in Week 1. Submit the basic details for your role by answering the required questions for review and approval asap but no later than 4pm on Monday, 5 August.

2. Prepare your Position Description. Following a job analysis interview with your contact, you will prepare a detailed position description, including the job description and person specification. You will learn how to do this in Week 3. If you submit this no later than 4pm on Monday 19 August, it will be reviewed, and you will be given feedback on it to help you with the next step. (This feedback will be non-graded)

3. Prepare a Recruitment & Selection Strategy Report. You will develop a full, evidence-based recruitment and selection strategy and implementation plan, taking into account legal requirements, ethical expectations and the use of technology. Your report will be a maximum of 3000 words and draw on an evidence base of a minimum of ten (10) good quality, peer reviewed journal articles.

4. When you submit your Report, you will include a cover note with it, reflecting on your experience of team-based learning so far.

This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Submission guidelines

Your Report must be submitted to the relevant TurnitIn Submission folder in the Report Recruitment & Selection Strategy folder on Blackboard.

You may be able to apply for an extension.

Late submission

A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.
