This capstone course provides students with an opportunity to reflect on the content and self-knowledge built up in the core courses of the Leadership field of study, and to develop a program for their future development as a leader. It comprises reflections on a set of practices and a project throughout the semester. The interactions are designed to be collegial and dialogic, directed towards developing a credible leadership path for each student.
"Leadership in Practice" is the capstone for the Leadership course bringing together the theory and practice of the prerequisite leadership courses. This course is an immersive course designed to equip you with essential skills for effective people management and team leadership. Through a blend of theoretical insights and practical applications, you will embark on a self-exploratory journey to discover and enhance your leadership capacities. This course emphasises the development of core leadership competencies, including decision-making, strategic thinking, cognitive and emotional mastery, and cross-cultural understanding. Additionally, you will gain hands-on experience in mentorship and coaching by engaging in peer-mentoring activities, fostering a deeper understanding of the dynamics of guiding and supporting others in a professional setting.

Task description
You will deliver a presentation based on your Leadership Practices and how the practices enable you to mitigate the dark side of leadership in your future leadership.
In your presentation, you should cover the following points:
- What is the dark side of leadership?
- Critically reflecting on the five Leadership Practices, explain how you think the leadership practices enable you to mitigate toxic elements in your leadership.
The presentation will take place during the scheduled seminar. Failure to attend the presentation on the due date will incur a mark.
Please note that the quality of the content is much more important than the delivery. However, a good presentation is a combination of reliable and clear content + professional communication. For this reason, I have allocated marks to both the content and presentation (see the marking rubric).
A copy of your slides needs to be submitted via Blackboard, and before the seminar.
Please make sure that you:
- Stick to the time limit (8 minutes per person. This may vary depending on the number of enrolments. You will be advised in advance if any changes were applied.)
- Limit the number of slides you use (I recommend no more than 6)
- Draw on quality reference materials and cite them on your slides. At least five journal articles (other than the suggested readings). Your reflection should show the benefit of having read intelligently in order to give you useful concepts and vocabulary.
- Focus on professional communication (eye contact, pace, projection, etc.)
