The course covers specialised aspects of molecular approaches to the study and understanding of immunology and infectious diseases at an advanced level presented in a modular form. Modules include: immunology, mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis, viral infectious diseases and immunity, and parasitic diseases and immunity. Interactive learning is encouraged within each module. Literature reviews, poster and in class quiz assessment items are designed to reinforce knowledge gained in each module. There is no practical component in this course.
Immunology and infectious diseases are closely linked disciplines in which research at the molecular level is rapidly informing an understanding of pathogenic microorganisms, the immune system, and disease control. Immunology involves the study of how the body responds and defends itself from disease-causing microorganisms. This course uses important bacterial, viral, and parasitic models as examples to provide a platform for the understanding of the molecular basis of these processes and the contribution to improved disease control.

Aims and outcomes
The course aims to explore the molecular basis of microbial pathogenicity and molecular approaches to the study and understanding of immunology and infectious diseases. Modules on immunology, mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis, viral diseases and immunity, and parasitic diseases and immunity will be used to introduce current topics and emerging advances in these fields. These concepts will be further explored and developed through targeted library assignments, quizzes and a presentation.

You are required to submit assessable items on time. If you fail to meet the submission deadline for any assessment item, then 10% of the maximum possible mark for the assessment item (assessment ‘marked from’ value) will be deducted as a late penalty for every day (or part day) late after the due date. For example, if you submit your assignment 1 hour late, you will be penalised 10%; if your assignment is 24.5 hours late, you will be penalised 20% (because it is late by one 24-hour period plus part of another 24-hour period). 10% will be deducted per day for up to 7 calendar days, at which point your submission will receive a mark of zero (0) unless an extension has been approved.

Task description
Students, divided into two streams, will be required to submit a poster online via Turnitin. The poster presentation will be marked individually and submitted online for assessment. The topics for the poster presentation and the task will be outlined in week 1 of this module by the lecturer. Instructions for the format of the poster presentation will be provided on the MICR7002 Blackboard site and by the lecturer.

Assessment Hurdles
In order to pass this course, you must meet ALL of the following requirements (if you do not meet these requirements, the maximum grade you will receive will be a 3):
- You must obtain an overall course mark of 50% or more; and
- You must obtain a minimum weighted average mark of 40% across all other non-examination course assessment items;
Additional course requirement:
- To receive a grade above 4 you must obtain an overall mark of 40% or more in the in-semester examination.
Supplementary assessment

To receive a passing grade of 3S4, you must obtain a mark of 50% or more on the supplementary assessment.

Assessment Submission
It is the responsibility of the student to ensure the on time, correct and complete submission of all assessment items.
