The practice of midwifery involves partnerships with women, families, and communities. Knowledge and skills are the foundation to midwifery practice but knowing how to work in partnership with women and families is essential. This course will introduce students to the art of midwifery practice. Using a narrative approach to learning, students will explore cases and interact with women and families who have undergone the lived experience of challenges with preconception, assisted conception, and experienced normal pregnancy, labour and birth.
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the practice of midwifery involving partnerships with women, families and communities. Students will explore the concepts of preconception, assisted conception, normal pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period.

Aims and outcomes
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the practiceﾠof midwifery involving partnerships with women, families and communities. Students will explore the concepts of preconception, assisted conception, normal pregnancy, labour and birth.ﾠ
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
LO1.
Interpret the frameworks and evidence which can be used to inform midwifery practice for preconception, antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care.
LO2.
Identify the role of the midwife in providing culturally responsive care from the preconception period through the pregnancy continuum to women, babies and families, including those undergoing assisted reproduction.
LO3.
Explain the legal and professional responsibilities of the midwife for safe drug administration during pregnancy, labour, and birth, including knowledge of scope of practice and the need to accept accountability and responsibility for their own actions.
LO4.
Examining the aims of pre-pregnancy care discussing safety and quality for women and families, while exploring the meaning of fertility and infertility and identify the key aspects of assisted reproduction.
LO5.
Reflect on the philosophy of midwifery led care, and importance of midwifery partnership to midwifery practice and womens experiences of childbirth, particularly those who are vulnerable.

Task description
Assessment item 1: Students are to prepare a Fact Sheet on a choice of topics that address preconception, antenatal, intrapartum or postnatal issues. Student are to present a 3-minute presentation outlining the information in their Fact Sheet. Please refer to the marking criteria and task description within the Blackboard site for more detail.

Students are required to submit an electronic copy of this assessment to BlackBoard. Please visit the companion BlackBoard site for the link to upload in the Assessment tab.
This assessment requires students to submit an electronic version of their assignment via Blackboard.
The anti-plagiarism software Turnitin is being used at UQ. The electronic version of your assignment will be submitted via Blackboard, using the Turnitin software. Work submitted will be subjected to a plagiarism detection process.

The maximum extension allowed is 28 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

- Requests for extensions received after the assessment item submission due date may not be approved. Late requests must include evidence of the reasons for the late request.
- The extension granted should be in proportion to the period of illness or disruption caused by the exceptional circumstances and will typically be no more than the specified maximum extension length.
- Students on a Student Access Plan (SAP) with a clause on extension requests must still adhere to the extensions request policy outlined. Students need to attach the SAP and a note outlining their current situation with the online extension application. A maximum of 7 days will be granted on the basis of an SAP. An extension request beyond 7 days will require additional supporting information as this request will not be considered on the basis of the SAP, but rather additional events (whether they relate to the circumstances of the SAP or not).
Outcome of application
- Extension requests are generally processed within 2 working days. Students can see the outcome of their application by logging in to my.UQ.
Late submission

Task description
The aim of this assignment is to increase your knowledge of the role of continuity of midwifery care in vulnerable women. The completion of the assignment will provide students with an overview of the benefits and challenges of working in partnership with diverse groups of women and families.
