This course includes 120 placement hours and will continue to build on the midwifery foundational skills learned in semester 1. In this semester, there is a focus on the principles of medication administration in the mother and neonate. Safety in drug administration as well as observational techniques for the mother and neonate required when drugs are utilised will be learned. Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the principles and mechanisms of normal labour and birth and conduct of the care and support of a woman through a normal labour and birth. Non-pharmacological methods of pain relief in pregnancy, labour and birth are also considered. Students will be assessed for clinical competence and continue to maintain a portfolio of evidence in the acquisition of Midwifery Practice Experiences (MPEs), in varied maternity related settings.
This course will provide students with ongoing opportunities to develop their clinical practice skills. The focus of the semester will surround medication administration and the safe practice when performing this task. Students will also build upon their role in supporting the woman during labour and birth.
Throughout the semester, clinical learning experiences will be planned to integrate with the theoretical concepts covered in the companion courses. These experiences will occur throughout the semester at your clinical placement site. Students will be rostered to attend either morning, afternoon or night duty shifts for eight (8)ᅠhours duration, and will complete fifteen (15) shifts during the semester. Students must be aware that when they are attending clinical placement, they are there as representatives of the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work of the University of Queensland, therefore, professional deportment and professional behaviour is essential. In addition to their clinical placement, students will have planned clinical based learning (CBL) sessions in the laboratories with a Lecturer. In these sessions, they will learn specific skills that relate to the course, which they may then implementᅠunder supervisionᅠin their clinical placement.
Throughout the semester students are required to submit evidence of progressᅠduringᅠplacement according to assessment and learning activity requirements as outlined in Sections 6 and 8. If further evidence is required, students will be advised accordingly. Students who do not achieve/maintain clinical performance commensurate with learning and experience at any point in the semester may be placed on a practice learning plan by the Course Coordinator in consultation with the Practice Education Manager (Midwifery) / Clinical placement facilitator for ongoing support with the development of skills and clinical performance. If fitness to practice and safety concerns are raised, students may be withdrawn from the clinical placement at the discretion of the Practice Education Manager (Midwifery) / Program Lead, and in consultation with the Head of School.
