This course will consolidate midwifery practice skills developed in Year 1, further enhancing students’ ability to provide woman-centred midwifery care. The focus is on managing pregnancy, labour and birth complicated by medical conditions, including hypertension. Students will be assessed for clinical competence in a simulated environment and will maintain an ePortfolio documenting their skill-based assessments in practice. Ongoing achievement of midwifery practice experiences (MPEs) is a mandatory requirement.

MIDW2103 is a clinical practice course, with 120hrs of clinical placement.

Throughout the semester students are required to submit evidence of progress when on placement according to the assessment requirements. If further evidence of progress is required, the student will be advised accordingly. Students who have not achieved/maintained performance commensurate with experience at any point in time throughout the semester will be notified and a formal learning plan will be initiated. If fitness to practice concerns are raised, students may be withdrawn from the placement at the discretion of the Program Lead/Practice Team Educator in consultation with the Course Coordinator and/or the Head of School.

Midwifery Practice Experience Requirements

It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that that the required Midwifery Practice Experiences (MPE) are achieved over this course, and overall in the program, and are entered into the MyProgress ePAD. Program requirements include, but are not limited to:

100 Antenatal episodes of careᅠ

10 1st stage of labour

30 Births as primary accoucheur

20 Examination of a newborn infant

100 Postnatal episodes of care

40 Women with complex needs

Depending on individual placement, a minimum of 30 entries of MPEs are required to be achieved and entered in the ePAD in this semester. These will be reviewed and verified each semester by the Course Coordinator or your assigned Practice Educator. Decisions relating to continuing clinical placements and individual requirements will be determined based on submitted ePAD entries.

Of the completed MPEs, the students should be primary accoucheur of 5.

Continuity of Care Experience (CoCE) information

Students are required to maintain a record of CoCEs following the Continuity of Care Protocol (2024). Students should ensure that at least 2 CoCEs are in the process of being completed this semester. Please note that birthing numbers may include women the student has engaged with as part of the CoCE.

It is the responsibility of the Course Coordinator, with the assistance of the Practice Educator assigned to students, to provide support and regular ongoing evaluation of each student’s clinical midwifery experience through the mid-point and end-point assessment aligned with the clinical courses. The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) requires documentation of each student’s achievement of all required Midwifery Practice Experiences for graduation as a Midwife. The ePAD is the platform where these experiences are documented and needs to be completed in a timely manner.
