This course will provide students with an overview of the challenges around caring for mothers and babies with a critical illness, including ways to prevent the devastating outcomes of critical illness in pregnancy, labour and the puerperium. The role of the midwife in early recognition of critical illness of childbearing women and identification of the need for a rapid response and/or timely referral to the multidisciplinary healthcare team to achieve safe, high quality care based on current evidence will be explored, together with the need for a knowledgeable and skilled multidisciplinary team who is well rehearsed in the treatment of maternal and neonatal emergency response.

This course is designed for second year Bachelor of Midwifery and third year Bachelor of Midwifery and Bachelor of Nursing Dual Degree students. The course incorporates theory-based learning through lectures, and Inquiry Based Learning (IBL). The IBL sessions are designed to significantly aid student learning and critical thinking with oral assessments incorporated throughout the semester, presented face to face. Please note assessment in this course will be recorded via Zoom for marking and moderation purposes. Lectures will also be presented face to faceᅠand attendance is a course expectation. Lectures will also be recorded for review and study purposes. The course is held over 13 weeks and the educational focus is on developing an in-depth knowledge and understanding of managing a woman and neonateᅠwith critical illness in the peripartum period.

It is assumed that students taking this course have successfully completed all pre-requisite coursesᅠor have been granted credit for these courses. Students will be required to be competent in the content learned in semester oneᅠto advance their midwifery knowledge in semester 2 .

Aims and outcomes

This course aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to care for women and neonates experiencing critical illness. Students will consolidate content learned in MIDW2102/MIDW2108 and continue to develop woman centred midwifery care skills needed to advance midwifery practice. Students will achieve this through attendance at, and participation in, lectures, and inquiry-based learning tutorials.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

LO1.

Critically examine the significance of consultation, referral and a multidisciplinary approach to the care of women and neonates with critical illness in pregnancy labour and the puerperium, including rural and remote settings.

LO2.

Analyse the aetiology, management and apply skills including monitoring, assessment and care of the woman and baby for a range of emergency situations in pregnancy, labour, birth and the puerperium.

LO3.

Using contemporary and appropriate evidence, critically review the pathophysiology of, diagnosis, and evidence for treatment of, and expected outcomes associated with critical illness and life-threatening emergencies of significance to midwifery practice.

LO4.

Analyse and critically review the contemporary and relevant evidence used to inform midwifery care of women with a critical illness or life-threatening emergency, with a particular focus on the use of digital health technology to improve health outcomes.

LO5.

Advocate culturally responsive strategies to support women and their families as they are challenged by and deal with the physical and psychological complications of a critical illness or a life-threatening emergency in pregnancy, labour, birth and the puerperium.

Task description

Task: Oral Presentation 

Weighting: 40%

Due Date: Assigned IBL Classes August 5th -October 25th, 2024

Task Description: Your individual oral presentation topic will be generated as a course identified learning outcome or directly as a critical issue from the prior IBL session. Presentations from the previous IBL session will take place BEFORE the next IBL session and presented in class. Your 15-minute oral presentation will compose up to 40 marks for the subject. Time length of your presentation must be within +/- 10% of the allocated time. A time limit outside this 10% will result in 10% reduction of the total mark available. Please note presentations will be recorded for marking purposes.

Reference system: Slides must be referenced throughout using APA 7th edition or Vancouver.

The maximum extension allowed is 28 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Extension guidelines 


  • Extension requests should be submitted prior to the assessment deadline. 
  • Extension requests must state the due date and the due time of the assessment. 
  • Requests for extensions received after the assessment item submission due date may not be approved. Late requests must include evidence of the reasons for the late request.  
  • The extension granted should be in proportion to the period of illness or disruption caused by the exceptional circumstances and will typically be no more than the specified maximum extension length. 
  • Students on a Student Access Plan (SAP) with a clause on extension requests must still adhere to the extensions request policy outlined. Students need to attach the SAP and a note outlining their current situation with the online extension application. A maximum of 7 days will be granted on the basis of an SAP. An extension request beyond 7 days will require additional supporting information as this request will not be considered on the basis of the SAP, but rather additional events (whether they relate to the circumstances of the SAP or not).

  • Extension requests are generally processed within 2 working days. Students can see the outcome of their application by logging in to my.UQ. 
  • Appeals against a refusal of an extension should be lodged through the Student Grievance Resolution process outlined on my.UQ
Late submission

A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

Penalties for late submission 


  • Assessments submitted late will have 10% of the mark available deducted per day (including weekends and public holidays). 
  • Work submitted more than 7 days after the due date without an approved extension will not receive a mark. 
  • Please note for pass/fail assessment there is no daily loss of marks. Assessment that is submitted late is given zero marks.

Task Description: This assessment will examine the learning objectives of the MIDW2105 course content. Questions will be derived from lecture content, readings, and provided course content. The exam will be, online invigilated on campus in this course using the Inspera Assessment Platform. Inspera Assessment provides additional functionality to complement the existing suite of digital learning tools at UQ with a greater range of question types and accessibility provisions.
