This course will continue to extend students' midwifery practice. Building on the skills developed in MIDW2103, students will extend their practice to include care of women and families experiencing life-threatening complications around labour and birth. The role of the midwife in the multidisciplinary healthcare team responding to unexpected life-threatening emergencies will be analysed, and simulated experiences will be further utilised to assist students to extend their practice. Care of women in premature labour and birth and subsequent care of the premature neonate will also be covered. Students will be assessed for clinical competence and continue to maintain a portfolio of evidence in the acquisition of Midwifery Practice Experiences.
The course is a companion course to MIDW2105 - Maternal and Newborn Critical Illness.
MIDW2106 is a clinical practice course therefore throughout the semester, students are required to submit evidence of progress when on placement according to the assessment requirements outlined in the Assessment section.
If further evidence of progress is required, the students will be advised accordingly. Students who have not achieved/maintained performance commensurate with experience at any point in time throughout the semester will be notified and a formal learning plan will be initiated. If fitness to practice concerns are raised, students may be withdrawn from the placement at the discretion of the Program Lead/Practice Team Educator in consultation with the Head of School.
It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that that the required Midwifery Practice Experience Requirements (MPEs) are entered into ePAD over the program, which include in total:
- 100 Antenatal episodes of care
- 10 1st stage of labour
- 30 Births as primary accoucheur
- 20 Examination of a newborn infant
- 100 Postnatal episodes of care
- 40 Women with complex needs
- 10 CoCEs

Midwifery Practice Experience Requirements (MPEs) The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) requires documentation of each student's achievement of all MPEs for graduation as a Registered Midwife. Your ePAD is the documentation platform and needs to be completed in real time at time of the experience. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that all of the MPEs, are submitted in ePAD each semester. It is a requirement that at least 2 CoCE are in the process of being completed this semester. Additionally there is a recommendation that 5 births are achieved. Please note that birthing numbers may include women the student has engaged with as part of the CoCE. It is the responsibility of the Practice Educator / Facilitator / Lecturer assigned to the student to provide support and regular ongoing evaluation of each student's clinical midwifery practice experience through the Mid-point and FINAL assessment aligned with the clinical courses. Overall, a minimum of 30 MPE entries for BMid students of their midwifery clinical experiences this semester, are to be submitted to meet requirements. Decisions relating to continuing clinical placements and individual requirements will be determined based on submitted entries. These entries can be any midwifery practice requirements and can be dependent on your clinical placement, however must include the required amount of CoCE that are to be recruited each semester. If you are experiencing issues in recruiting MPEs or CoCEs, you must liaise with your PE or Facilitator. The Interprofessional Practice Collaboration (HABS1240) module is a Pass/Fail assessment task. Students who pass the module will receive a course grade based on the remaining assessment in the course. For students who engage with the module, participate in the group work and submit a genuine attempt but do not achieve a pass grade for their submitted work, will be given a second opportunity to pass the module by completing a reflective essay. If this is task is successfully completed, a grade will be awarded based on the remaining assessment in the course. Students who do not engage with the module, fail to participate in the group work, or do not submit a genuine attempt, will be given an opportunity to complete a 5,000 word assignment on teamwork.
