This course enables students to change from the Bachelor of Nursing program to either the Bachelor of Midwifery or the Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery following completion of year one in the Bachelor Nursing. This course provides the foundational midwifery knowledge covered in Year One of the Bachelor of Midwifery or the Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery through intensive workshops over two (2) weeks, including clinical skills simulation augmented by online modules and face to face lectures prior to students' exposure to health complexities in pregnancy.
On successful completion of the intensive workshop, students will join the midwifery student cohort to explore health complexities women have in pregnancy. Some women experience complications and/or have existing medical conditions that will require specialist obstetric and multidisciplinary care during pregnancy, labour and birth and in the postpartum period. Midwives play a pivotal role in the care process not only in delivering the necessary care but also in providing continuity and support and interfacing either directly or indirectly with all members of the multidisciplinary team. The role of the midwife in screening, assessment, and early detection of such conditions, as well as the psychological impact on mothers and families will be explored. Students will have the opportunity to practice skills of monitoring, assessing and caring for the woman and baby with complexities, in a simulated environment.
NB The intensive workshop is timetabled for the 2 weeks before the beginning of Semester One.
NB The mandatory intensive workshop is timetabled for the 2 weeks before the beginning of Semester One and includes midwifery clinical skills development in a simulated environment.
This teaching intensive 2 week course will introduce midwifery as a profession that values woman-centred care. The emphasis for learning is on normal physiology in relation to pregnancy and birth, and developing midwifery skills required for clinical placement. Once the intensive component is completed, students will commence learning aboutᅠmaternal and new born health complexities in pregnancy.ᅠThe course incorporates theory based learning through lectures, and Problem Based Learning (PBL).The PBL sessions are designed to significantly aid student learning and critical thinking with oral assessments incorporated throughout the semester. Lectures will be presented by expert guest and UQ staff lecturers and will be on campus, face-to-face, and recorded for studying purposes.ᅠ

LO5.
Analyse common medical conditions that women experience in pregnancy and their effect on both mother and baby and examine strategies in providing culturally responsive woman-centred care to women as they are challenged by and deal with the physical and psychological complications of high-risk birthing.
LO6.
Using contemporary and appropriate evidence, critically examine the pathophysiology of, diagnosis, and evidence for treatment of, and expected outcomes associated with complex medical conditions of significance to midwifery practice.
LO7.
Investigate and advocate for the importance midwives have in providing health promotion and prevention strategies for women with complex medical conditions including women from culturally diverse backgrounds.
LO8.
Critically review how contemporary and relevant evidence can be used to inform midwifery care of women with complex health needs with a particular focus on the use of digital health technology to improve health outcomes.
