This course will consolidate students' midwifery practice within the Continuity of Care Experiences (CoCE). Clinical practice hours are allocated to the recruitment and continuation of the 10 CoCE required for AHPRA registration as a midwife. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that all clinical midwifery practice experiences including the achieved number of births in which they acted as the primary accoucheur and the required number of CoCE are documented in the student's ePAD. It is a requirement of the course that at least two (2) CoCE are recruited this semester.
MIDW3102 is the fifth course in the Clinical Practice stream. The educational focus is on developing in depth midwifery knowledge and practice within the practice setting and with with Continuity of Care Experiences (CoCE).ᅠ Clinical experiences will occur throughout the semester, commencing in Week 1 of the semester, or early commencement in the new university year. In this period, students are allocated 160 hours of clinical practice which includes allocated shifts in the antenatal clinic, to enable and support students to recruit women for their required CoCE, as well as continuing to meet the requirements of birth and postnatal experiences. ᅠStudents will be attending care during the 24 hour time period across seven days of the week,ᅠas determined by the requirements and needs of each woman in the CoCE, as well as rostered clinical shifts. Students must be aware that when they are attending care encounters with their CoCE or attending clinical shiftsᅠthat they are there as representatives of the School of Nursing, Midwifery & Social Work of the University of Queensland, therefore, professional presentation, deportment and behaviour is essential.
It is a requirement of the clinical course MIDW3102 that studentsᅠrecruitᅠat least two (2) CoCE, however, by the end of this courseᅠeight (8) CoCE in total for the program, needs to be have been recruited.ᅠ It is the responsibility of the Course Coordinator and Practice Educator assigned to the student to provide support and regular ongoing evaluation of each student's clinical midwifery experience through the mid-point and final assessment aligned with this clinical course.ᅠ
The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) requires documentation of each student’s achievement of all required midwifery practice experiences for graduation as a Midwife.ᅠ Your ePAD is the documentation platform and needs to be completed in each shift, in a live environment with the midwife, to sign off experiences as they occur each shift or experience.
Throughout the semester students are required to submit evidence of progress when on placement according to the assessment requirements outlined in Section 5.1. If furtherᅠevidence of progress is required, the students will be advised accordingly. Students who have not achieved/maintained performance commensurate with experience at any point in time throughout the semester will be notified and a formal placement learning plan will be implemented by the Course Coordinatorᅠ(in consultation with the Lead Practice Educator [Midwifery]). If fitness to practice concerns are raised, students may be withdrawn from the placement at the discretion ofᅠthe Program Lead, andᅠin consultation with the Headᅠof School.
