This course provides students with an opportunity to develop the leadership qualities required to transition from novice to advanced practitioner. Being able to work in complex settings is essential to the provision of quality care to women, families and communities. There is a focus on building self-awareness, interpersonal skills and therapeutic relationships, while using higher level communication techniques. Students will be challenged to demonstrate contemporary expertise as a team member, consumer advocate, educator, leader and mentor of self and others.
Practicing as a registered midwife requires an advanced ability to work in and manage complex situations. Including leadership theoretic underpinnings to practice is necessary for the future workforce to inform contemporary and woman focused care. This incorporates progressive cultural awareness, understanding and resilience to provide the underpinnings of team and professional leadership perspectives. Employers are seeking graduates who demonstrate leadership abilities when working with colleagues, women and families, and effective communication skills are vital.
