Analysis of clinical MRI data obtained by the student and preparation of a report describing the advantages or problems of the methodology used.

This is a four unit (equivalent to two electives) course, designed for people who are working in clinical practice who do not have the opportunity to conduct original research.

The research project is carried out on routinely acquired data, i.e. the patient does not undergo any further sequences as a result of the research.

Internal students use data acquired at CAI and work under the supervision of the course coordinator.

Most commonly, the research is performed by reviewing previously acquired data.ᅠ Some examples of previous projects include:

  • Review of carotid MR in patients who also had DSA
  • Review of foetal MR in cases with abnormal US findings.ᅠ Student liaised with referring obstetrician to see whether the MR had added to the US findings, and whether patient management was altered as a result of the MR
  • Review of abdominal vascular protocols.ᅠ Student assessed images and sequences used, and proposed areas for improvement
  • Review of MRA in patients who also had CTA of intracranial vessels
  • Review of contrast and non-contrast carotid MRA sequences in the same patient

Course requirements

Assumed background

Undergraduate qualification in radiography, biomedical engineering or medical physics (or international equivalent), and the core subjects of the Graduate Certificate in Magnetic Resonance Technology.

Prerequisites

You'll need to complete the following courses before enrolling in this one:

(MRES7001 or MRES7100) + MRES7002 + MRES7003 + (MRES7004 or MRES7400).

Incompatible

You can't enrol in this course if you've already completed the following:

MOLI7106, MRES7018, MRES7019, MRES7020, MRES7021 & MRES7022

Internal students work with data acquired at CAI and have weekly meetings as required with the course coordinator.

Aims and outcomes

On completing this course students will use the skills they have learnt in the Magnetic Resonance Technology program to independently critically analyse MRi data acquired as part of normal clinical practice, and assess the benefits and problems associated with MRI.

1 (Low Fail)

Absence of evidence of achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: 1% The dissertation and PowerPoint presentation demonstrate a very limited grasp of the present state of knowledge as indicated by the literature review, and how the investigation could contribute to that knowledge, and a poor attempt is made to outline some of the objectives of the clinical study, and the methodology used. The results are incomplete and the discussion displays very limited knowledge of the effective clinical application of the project, and no bibliography is given.

2 (Fail)

Minimal evidence of achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: 30% The dissertation and PowerPoint presentation demonstrate a limited grasp of the present state of knowledge as indicated by the literature review, and how the investigation could contribute to that knowledge, and attempts to outline some of the objectives of the clinical study, and the methodology used. The results, presentation and the discussion display some knowledge of the effective clinical application of the project, and an incomplete bibliography is presented.

3 (Marginal Fail)

Demonstrated evidence of developing achievement of course learning outcomes

Course grade description: 47% The dissertation and PowerPoint presentation demonstrate some understanding of the present state of knowledge as indicated by the literature review, and how the investigation could contribute to that knowledge, and gives some of the objectives of the clinical study, and the methodology used. The results, presentation and the discussion display some knowledge of the effective clinical application of the project, and bibliography is presented.

4 (Pass)

Demonstrated evidence of functional achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: 50% The dissertation and PowerPoint presentation demonstrate an adequate understanding of the present state of knowledge as indicated by the literature review, and how the investigation could contribute to that knowledge, and gives an outline of the objectives and methodology used. The results are presented and the discussion displays knowledge of the effective practical application of the research, and a bibliography is presented.

5 (Credit)

Demonstrated evidence of proficient achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: 65% The dissertation and PowerPoint presentation demonstrate a good grasp of the present state of knowledge as indicated by the literature review, and how the investigation could contribute to that knowledge, and gives a clear and concise outline of the objectives and methodology used. The results and discussion display insight into an effective practical application of the research, and the bibliography is presented in a standard journal format.

6 (Distinction)

Demonstrated evidence of advanced achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: 75% The dissertation and PowerPoint presentation demonstrate a comprehensive grasp of the present state of knowledge as indicated by a full literature review, and how the investigation could contribute to that knowledge, and gives a clear and concise outline of the objectives and methodology used. The results and discussion display very good insight into an effective practical application of the research, and an accurate bibliography is presented in a standard journal format.

7 (High Distinction)

Demonstrated evidence of exceptional achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: 85% The dissertation and PowerPoint presentation demonstrate an excellent grasp of the present state of knowledge as indicated by a comprehensive literature review, and how the investigation could contribute to that knowledge, and gives a clear and concise outline of the objectives and methodology used. The results and discussion display excellent insight into an effective practical application of the research, and an accurate bibliography is presented in a standard journal format.

Additional course grading information

A full commentary is given on the dissertation, and if it fails to meet the requirements, may be resubmitted.ᅠ However, if resubmitted after the due date, a maximum grade of 4 will be awarded.

  • If you wish to submit a draft of the dissertation before final submission, you must contact the course coordinator three weeks prior to submission date.
  • Plagiarism in assignments or recycling of previously submitted work will result in an academic penalty that could include a mark of zero for that assignment.

Applications for Extensions to Assessment Due Dates

Extension requests are submitted online via my.UQ – applying for an extension. Extension requests received in any other way will not be approved. Additional details associated with extension requests, including acceptable and unacceptable reasons, may be found at my.UQ.

Please note:

  • Requests for an extension to an assessment due date must be submitted through your my.UQ portal and you must provide documentation of your circumstances, as soon as it becomes evident that an extension is needed. Your application must be submitted on or before the assessment item's due date and time.
  • Applications for extension can take time to be processed so you should continue to work on your assessment item while awaiting a decision. We recommend that you submit any completed work by the due date, and this will be marked if your application is not approved. Should your application be approved, then you will be able to resubmit by the agreed revised due date.

  • If an extension is being sought on the basis of exceptional circumstances, it must be accompanied by supporting documentation (eg. Statutory declaration).
  • For extensions based on a SAP you may be granted a maximum of 7 days (if no earlier maximum date applies). See the Extension or Deferral availability section of each assessment for details. Your SAP is all that is required as documentation to support your application. However, additional extension requests for the assessment item will require the submission of additional supporting documentation e.g., a medical certificate. All extension requests must be received by the assessment due date and time.
  • Students may be asked to submit evidence of work completed to date. Lack of adequate progress on your assessment item may result in an extension being denied.
  • If you have been ill or unable to attend class for more than 14 days, you are advised to carefully consider whether you are capable of successfully completing your courses this semester. You might be eligible to withdraw without academic penalty - seek advice from the Faculty that administers your program.
  • There are no provisions for exemption from an assessment item within UQ rules. If you are unable to submit an assessment piece then, under special circumstances, you may be granted an exemption, but may be required to submit alternative assessment to ensure all learning outcomes are met.
