The development of instrumental or vocal technique, ensemble participation, and awareness of stylistic and interpretative characteristics of repertory studies, including study of lyric diction for singers.

This course provides foundational training in solo and ensemble performance on an instrument or voice, focusing on the development of relevantᅠtechnical skills. The course is taught by a large number of staff who are involved in teaching the full range of instruments and vocal types.

Task description

Through the weekly lessons, students receive feedback from their teachers on their development towards becoming a professional musician (composer/performer/teacher). Teachers may ask you to provide short recordings/compositional sketches of your performing/practising/composing, which will be discussed in your lessons, clarifying feedback and expectations of your progression. At the end of semester, your allocated teacher will provide you with a final report summarising cumulative feedback from across the entire semester. If you have more than one allocated teacher, they will collaborate and provide you with a single final report.

Task description

Students must demonstrate development appropriate to their year level as ensemble performers and composers. They are expected to attend the weekly class relevant to their studies

Students who participate in UQ School of Music Cohort Collaboration classes, together with any associated performances, are assessed on their development, contribution and participation throughout the semester through an ensemble director report. Vocal Students in Practical Studies 1-3 must pass a diction test in their studies for this semester for a passing grade.

Task description

Students are expected to attend the weekly workshop specific to their principal study. Students must demonstrate development throughout the semester appropriate to their year level by participation in workshop activities, and are assessed through a workshop director report. It is highly advisable for the student to record performances in this class to show their participation and progression throughout the semester. Composition students will be given tasks and skills to complete in this session.

Task description

Through the weekly lessons, students prepare a recital combining technical work, which can include scales, arpeggios, cadenzas, vocalises, etudes, and studies, as agreed upon with their instrumental teacher. Teachers may select repertoire from the standard instrumental/vocal canon to develop technical skills. For orchestral instruments, up to two orchestral excerpts may be included. Additionally, teachers may combine students for duets from orchestral excerpts or stand-alone duet pieces with other cohort members. Students must prepare repertoire in consultation with their teacher, ensuring it meets the performance, or compositional standards appropriate for their current semester of study. Students will be scheduled to perform without accompaniment (except for singers), during the examination period. Time limits are listed below. Composition students must present a portfolio of works under the guidance of their one-to-one teacher where the style or genre of compositions will be discussed and negotiated.

Submission guidelines

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 28 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Extension requests must be received on or before the due date. No extensions will be granted afterwards. 

Late submission

A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

The reduction for late submission is 10% of the maximum possible mark allocated for the assessment item, or one grade per day if graded on the basis of 1-7, deducted per day for up to 7 calendar days, at which point any submission will not receive any marks unless an extension has been approved. Each 24 hour block is recorded from the time the submission is due.

Instrument Students are expected to bring their own instruments to all ensemble and group music-making activities as advised. Students who are either required or invited to participate in any ensemble activity are expected to bring their own instrument to rehearsals and performances, with the following exceptions where the School will provide the instruments: - cor anglais - bass clarinet - contra-bassoon - percussion own item needed
Music Scores Music scores for relevant solo and ensemble works are to be purchased, hired or downloaded. Teachers will direct students to appropriate scores, books, and recordings for your specific studies. own item needed
Hearing Protection Students and staff participating in some practical activities are exposed to hazardous noise, and must have appropriate hearing protection to reduce the level of exposure so it is safe to participate in those activities. Currently identified activities are: Brass Ensemble and Workshop Saxophone Ensemble Percussion Ensemble and Workshop Flute Ensemble and Workshop Students must obtain and use custom fitted musician moulds with 10dB attenuation to participate in these practical activities. These can be purchased at the UQ Health and Rehabilitation Clinics through the Audiology Clinic. Practical Lesson

You receive 12 one-hour lessons with your allocated teacher throughout the semester.

Lessons are usually scheduled weekly during semester. Your allocated teacher may agree to a different schedule if you request one.

Your allocated teacher will let you know if it is possible to reschedule lessons. Lessons are usually rescheduled only because of unforeseen circumstances beyond your control, such as sudden illness.

The School of Music suspends all regular classes for one week each semester and schedules a week of special events, ensemble rehearsals, seminars and workshops, culminating in various performances at a number of internal and external venues which will be advised on Blackboard. Students are expected to attend all relevant seminars, presentations, rehearsals and performances. Any requests for planned absences must be provided in writing to the relevant teacher(s) and course coordinator well in advance; the course coordinator may ask for medical certificates for unplanned absences because of illness.
