Further study of techniques of Western tonal music and integrated writing, analysis & aural skills components.
This course continues from MUSC1600 ᅠand is divided into two components: (1) Tonal Harmony/Keyboard Skills and (2) Aural Musicianship.ᅠThe Tonal Harmony ᅠcomponent continues the study of the materials of Western tonal music, developing the diatonic language covered in MUSC1600ᅠ and introducing further concepts related to harmonic function, part writing, dissonance treatment and chromaticism, and involves keyboard work to consolidate these concepts.ᅠThe Aural Skills component aims to continue and consolidate fundamental skills in aural musicianship, ᅠdiatony, pentatony and simple harmony including intervals and triads. Sight singing, part work and rhythmic development are core elements of this component.

- consolidate your understanding of the fundamentals of diatonic tonal harmonyᅠthroughᅠboth analysis and music writing (usingᅠfour-part vocal and figured-bass/keyboardᅠstyles);
- introduce you to and develop yourᅠunderstanding ofᅠcertain elements of chromatic tonal harmonyᅠwithin an overall diatonic framework;
- extend your understanding of concepts related to tonal music, including phrase structure, harmonic progression, chord inversion, two-part linear structure,ᅠdissonance treatment, modulation to related keys,ᅠand other specific tonal/harmonic patterns; and
- express your understanding of the above through written and keyboard exercises.
The Aural Skillsᅠcomponent of MUSC2060 is designed to:
- foster your skills in active music making;

- Sing the Ionian, Lydian and Mixolydian modes while keeping the beat and an ostinato
- Sing and play one of the given canons at the keyboard
- Video an ensemble performance of a canon not performed for the tasks above
Part 2 (due Friday Week 11):
- Perform a given compound time rhythm including irregular groupings and ties while keeping beat, in time, without the use of a metronome
- Sing all the modes in note names and solfa in tune from the same starting note while keeping the beat and performing an ostinato
- Sing and play one of the given canons at the keyboard
- Video an ensemble performance of a canon not used for the tasks above.
- Sing a third canon while accompanying yourself at the keyboard using the left hand for the bass notes and using appropriately voiced chords in the right hand.

Task description
A final, take-home assessment for the Tonal Harmony / Keyboard component of the course will be issued in Week 10. The work set will require students to harmonise a chorale melody in SATB style, showing mastery of specific materials covered in weeks 1 to 10 (and, by implication, on-going mastery of the materials of MUSC1600), by following the methods outlined in the final two weeks of semester. Students are also required to perform the soprano and bass lines of their completed work on keyboard.
This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
