This course provides high-level postgraduate instrumentalists and vocalists the opportunity to focus on performance skills and to bridge the divide between undergraduate and professional assessment and engagement.
This course provides postgraduate/professional training in solo and ensemble performance on an instrument or voice, focusing on the exploration of relevant repertoire. The course is taught by a large number of staff who are involved in teaching the full range of instruments and vocal types.
All students must successfully audition to demonstrate their readiness to commence this course. Students are expected to audition beforeﾠthe first week of semester, during Orientation Week. If this is not feasibleﾠfor reasons of travel or availability, it may be possibleﾠ(in consultation with the course coordinator)ﾠto submit a video audition whichﾠshould be uploaded to YouTube or similar platform with a link provided to the performance beforeﾠ5pm on Wednesday of Orientation Week. It is recommended that students contact the course coordinator as far in advance of Orientation Week as possible to confirmﾠtheir intent to audition as well as provisionally enrolling in the course.
Audition Process
Applicants may audition for the following instruments/disciplines:
- Brass (any of horn, trombone, trumpet, tuba)
- Classical Guitar (not electric guitar)
- Percussion (must audition on snare, timpani and one mallet instrument)
- Piano (not electric keyboard)
- Strings (any of cello, double bass, violin, viola)
- Woodwind (any of bassoon, clarinet, flute, oboe)
- Voice
- Composition
You must prepare three (3) Western Art Music works of contrasting styles from different periods for the audition. Works should be presented with accompaniment when required: applicants must make personal arrangements for accompaniment. Blues, jazz, popular, folk, rock and similar genres are not acceptable repertoire for your audition. Composition students must submit a portfolio of works in consultation with the composition studies lecturer.
The audition takes approximately 15 minutes. You may not be required to play all three pieces during your audition. The audition includes a brief interview where you will be asked questions about your musical interests, experience, and future goals.
The School of Music does not provide verbal or written feedback on your audition performance.
Accompanists
Applicants auditioning on all instruments except classical guitar and piano are likely to require accompaniment for one or more of the works in their audition repertoire. Applicants must make personal arrangements for accompaniment. Details of potential accompanists are available at theﾠAccompanists' Guild of Queensland website.
The School of Music recommends that you:
- contact your accompanist before you apply for audition to ensure their availability and to ensure music for your repertoire is available to them;
- confirm your booking with your accompanist when the School advises you of your audition date and time; and
- re-confirm your booking in the week before your audition date.
The School of Music cannot provide a replacement accompanist if your accompanist is unavailable on the day of your audition.

Task description
Through the weekly lessons, students receive feedback from their teachers on their development as professional musicians.
At the end of semester, your allocated teacher will provide you with a final report summarising this feedback. If you have more than one allocated teacher, they will collaborate and provide you with a single final report.

Task description
Through the weekly lessons, student prepare a recital program of 30 mins of appropriate repertoire selected in collaboration with their allocated teacher, that demonstrate a level of artistic and technical competency appropriate to their year level (level 7 - professional/postgraduate)
Your recital will be scheduled to take place in the Nickson Room during the examination period. Piano accompaniment will be provided for applicable instruments. Details will be advised on Blackboard.
Composition students are required to prepare a portfolio of works in consultation with their tutor. The due date will be Friday 5pm in Exam week 1.

Late submission
A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

| Hearing Protection | Students and staff participating in some practical activities are exposed to hazardous noise, and must have appropriate hearing protection to reduce the level of exposure so it is safe to participate in those activities. Currently identified activities are: Brass Ensemble and Workshop Saxophone Ensemble Percussion Ensemble and Workshop Flute Ensemble and Workshop Students must obtain and use custom fitted musician moulds with 10dB attenuation to participate in these practical activities. Ensemble and group music-making All performance students are required to attend a weekly 2hr ensemble class in the period outlined relevant to their discipline. The following is the list of classes that available for you to sign up for: Lyric Diction for Voice Students Voice students in Performance Studies courses 1-3 are expected to attend the weekly class on language and diction. The aim of the workshops is to develop proficiency and competence in the major operatic languages (Italian in course 1, German in course 2, French in course 3) so that students can perform in these languages with a high degree of accuracy and confidence. Students are taught the phonetic representation and correct physiological formation of sounds of each of these languages, and practice songs in these languages. Opera Scenes for Vocal Students Voice students in Practical Studies 4-10 are expected to attend the weekly opera scenes class. Pulse String Ensemble Flutes Reeds Ensemble (split into Clarinet Ensemble or Wind Octet) Brass Ensemble Sketch - Contemporary Music Ensemble The contemporary ensemble class focuses on new compositions, contributed by members as well as drawn from international twenty-first century repertoire. Composition students in all Practical Studies courses are expected to attend the weekly classes, and to both play in and compose for the ensemble. The ensemble is open to any instrument or voice type, and students who are not studying composition are encouraged to participate and to compose new works for the ensemble. Students who are studying composition and wish to be assessed for this class must email both Dr Shaun Brown as course coordinator and Dr Robert Davidson as the ensemble director to request permission. Piano Collaborative Class Piano students in all Performance Studies courses are expected to attend the weekly piano collaborative class. Piano students are assigned duo or trio work with an instrumentalist or vocalist, and work with their nominated collaborative artist(s). Piano students may be expected to attend one-on-one lessons for their collaborative partner(s) and to have their collaborative partner(s) attend their one-on-one lessons. Percussion Ensemble Students are welcome to attend as many classes relevant to their skills as they wish. However they will only be assessed on one activity. All students are strongly encouraged to attend and participate in the Contemporary Music Ensemble and Piano Collaborative Class even if they are being assessed in other groups. There are no classes on public holidays. All students must attend and participate in any performances linked to these learning activities including Project Week.
