This course will provide students with the opportunity to build their midwifery and nursing practice, knowledge, skills and clinical experience. The role of the graduate midwife/nurse as an effective team member of the multidisciplinary team will be critiqued. Clinical courses assist the health practitioner to develop advanced clinical skills including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care. Across the suite of clinical courses included in the Bachelor of Nursing/ Bachelor of Midwifery program students will develop evidence-based practice skills, beginning leadership skills and mentoring of less experienced students. This course will offer students up to 360 hours of professional experience placement. Operating within the appropriate student scope of practice, students must demonstrate competence on their clinical placement when assessed against the requirements of the placement assessment tool. To successfully pass this course students must meet all course requirements to demonstrate competence against all course learning outcomes including the required completion of all Midwifery Practice Experiences.

It is assumed that students taking this course have successfully completed all pre-requisite courses or have been granted credit for these courses. Students will be required to be competent in the skills learned in prerequisite courses in order to advance their practice.
Mandatory Preparation (including Blue Card, First Aid currency, CPR certificates) is the responsibility of the student and must be completed prior to commencing Clinical Placement according to the due date / anniversary renewal date specified.

Aims and outcomes
This course aims to provide students with the clinical practice experience required in order to consolidate Midwifery practice skills. The course will also provide a structure for learning in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Midwifery Standards for Practice and UQ attributes in order to transition into the role of the graduate midwife.

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Capably enact at the level of a graduate registered midwife/nurse the key requirements for professional practice defined by Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia’s Professional Standards.
LO2.
Effectively plan, implement and evaluate midwifery/nursing care for a full workload that respects and acknowledges the values of women, individuals and their family of different cultures and backgrounds, while maintaining the principles of confidentiality and applies an evidence-based practice framework.
LO3.
Demonstrate and consolidate effective time management, clinical reasoning and professional judgement to deliver woman and person-centred care, that can be utilised in global environments.
LO4.
Utilise effective communication and beginning leadership skills to inform, educate and empower women, individuals, their family and colleagues towards safe and expected healthcare outcomes for the individual.

Task description
This assessment task comprises of three (3) parts which will examine and extend your preparedness and development throughout clinical placement.
Part 1 – Medication safety
This assessment comprises of two (2) parts and requires the student to undertake online assessments on medication drug calculations and completion of a clinical case study.
To pass this assessment students must achieve 100% in both assessment tasks and is to be completed by end of week one (1) of commencement of clinical practice.
Part 2 -Demonstration of knowledge and reflective practice through the Observed Clinical Practice and Feedback submissions.
Choose and complete two (2) skills by mid-point assessment and complete the required reflections.
Part 3- Demonstrated capability in clinical practice commensurate with the Course Learning Outcomes evidenced by completion and submission of the Australian Midwifery Standards Assessment Tool (AMSAT).
Submission of your signed Mid-Point AMSAT with skills to be completed via your ePAD.

Task description
This final assessment requires you to demonstrate successful completion of clinical placement. There are three (3) parts to this assessment:
Part 1 - Demonstration of knowledge and reflective practice through the Observed Clinical Practice and Feedback submissions.
- Choose and complete three (3) skills by final-point assessment and complete the required reflections.
Part 2 - Completion and upload of Midwifery Practice Experiences
Part 3 - Demonstrated capability in clinical practice commensurate with the NUMW3204 Course Learning Objectives evidenced by completion and submission of the Australian Midwifery Standards Assessment Tool (AMSAT).
Submission of your signed Final-Point AMSAT with skills to be completed via your ePAD.
Hurdle requirements
The student cannot pass the course unless they pass this assessment. To pass this assessment the student must: 1) Demonstrate competence in applying knowledge in Midwifery practice, 2) Adhere to expected scope of practice, and 3) Complete the clinical hours required in this course within the designated, rostered period.Submission guidelines

Task description

The assessment will be completed in the tutorial class. The due date is determined by the class allocation.
This is a team assessment, and all team members are expected to contribute equally to the team’s assessment items during the tutorial. Teams will be assigned prior to the tutorial. There are two (2) parts to this assessment both based upon a client case conference role play that your team will complete during the tutorial class.
Part one requires you to complete a worksheet and will draw on your case conference role play, focusing on role-clarification, team functioning and client-centred care.There is no word limit for the worksheet.
Part two requires you to complete a team reflection on the processes adopted during your case conference role play specifically focusing on interprofessional communication, team functioning, conflict management and collaborative leadership. Length: The team reflection will be limited to 500 words.
Teams will need to submit both assessment pieces in the Assessment tab on the IPCP Learn.UQ course site prior to the end of the tutorial class. Additional information regarding submission will be provided on the IPCP Learn.UQ course site.

Late submission
- Students who are unable to attend the module because they are away from Brisbane or ill on the day of the tutorial class, will be given an opportunity to complete the assessment individually. Successful completion of the assessment will enable a PASS grade for the module.
- For all students who submit a genuine attempt at the assessment but do not achieve a pass grade for their submitted work, they will be given a second opportunity to pass the module by completing a reflective essay. If this is task is successfully completed, a grade for the course will be awarded based on the remaining assessment in the course.
- Students who do not engage with the module and do not submit a genuine attempt, will be given an opportunity to complete a 5,000 word assignment on teamwork. Successful completion of this assignment will enable the student to be eligible to pass the course with a maximum grade of 4 (if the remaining assessment in the course would result in a grade higher than 4, a maximum grade of 4 will be awarded).
- Students who fail the module, who do not complete either the reflective essay or the teamwork assignment above will be awarded a maximum grade of 3 (if the remaining assessment in the course would result in a grade higher than 3, a maximum grade of 3 will be awarded).

Interprofessional Collaborative Practice Modules (Thursday/ Friday) There are three modules that consist of on-line preparation and face-to-face in class learning activities. You will engage in a range of learning activities to develop your knowledge and skills to help prepare you for working in teams when caring for clients. In Module Four, you will develop knowledge and skills to identify and manage conflict in healthcare teams. In Modules Five and Six you will expand your skills to communicate assertively in your team and advocate for your client applying your interprofessional practice skills. You will work in small teams in the tutorial groups with your peers from: Dentistry, Exercise Physiology, Midwifery, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Social Work and Speech Pathology. |
