Course overview

This course will provide students with the opportunity to build their midwifery and nursing practice, knowledge, skills and clinical experience. The role of the graduate midwife/nurse as an effective team member of the multidisciplinary team will be critiqued. Clinical courses assist the health practitioner to develop advanced clinical skills including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care. Across the suite of clinical courses included in the Bachelor of Nursing/ Bachelor of Midwifery program students will develop evidence-based practice skills, beginning leadership skills and mentoring of less experienced students. This course will offer students up to 360 hours of professional experience placement. Operating within the appropriate student scope of practice, students must demonstrate competence on their clinical placement when assessed against the requirements of the placement assessment tool. To successfully pass this course students must meet all course requirements to demonstrate competence against all course learning outcomes including the required completion of all Midwifery Practice Experiences.

NUMW3204 Clinical Midwifery Practice 7, is the final midwifery clinical course and will provide students with the opportunity to consolidate their midwifery practice, knowledge, skills and clinical experience gained in pre-requisite clinical practice courses.ﾠWith the benefit of a dual scope, students can perform to their full scope of practice, continuing to enhance, refine, and master their clinical practice. The student will be working across the entire midwifery pregnancy spectrum and provide care during the antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal periods to women and babies.ﾠ The student will continue to develop and refine their role in preparation for future graduation which includes being an effective team member in the maternity environment. Students will also complete the required Continuity of Care Experiences (CoCE) which will contribute to their skill consolidation and development. This placement will be an opportunity for students to think about where they might like to begin their midwifery career and really refine and master providing woman centred care.ﾠﾠﾠ

Throughout the semester, students will be rostered to attend either morning, afternoon or night duty shifts of eight (8) hours duration, and will complete forty-five (45) shifts, which totals 360 hours.ﾠ Students working in group practice models work on accumulation and completion of hours, rather than a rostered shift basis.ﾠ Students must be aware that when they are attending clinical placement, they are there as representatives of the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work of the University of Queensland, therefore, professional deportment and professional behaviour is essential.ﾠ

Throughout the semester students are required to submit evidence of progress during placement according to assessment and learning activity requirements as outlined in Sections 6 and 7. If further evidence is required, students will be advised accordingly. Students who do not achieve/maintain clinical performance commensurate with learning and experience at any point in the semester may be placed on a practice learning plan by the Course Coordinator in consultation with the Practice Education Manager-Midwifery, for ongoing support with the development of skills and clinical performance.ﾠ If fitness to practice and safety concerns are raised, students may be withdrawn from the clinical placement at the discretion of the Practice Education Manager-Midwifery/Program Lead (Dual Degree), in consultation with the Head of School.ﾠ

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) requires documentation of each student’s achievement of all required midwifery practice experiences for graduation as a Midwife.ﾠ Your ePAD is the documentation platform and needs to be completed in a timely manner, to avoid any delay in graduation.ﾠﾠProgress relating to your midwifery practice experiencesﾠwill be reviewed (in conjunction with your AMSAT assessment) to ensure timely submission for completion as a graduating requirement.ﾠThese will be reviewed and verified by the Course Coordinator. Decisions relating to continuing clinical placements and individual requirements will be determined based on submitted entries. These entries can be any midwifery practice experiences and can be dependent on your clinical placement and must include the final number ofﾠContinuity of Care Experiences (CoCE) to be recruited in the program.ﾠ This semester you will be required to submit all remaining Midwifery Practice Experiences (MPE) and CoCE in order to fulfil course requirements for graduation.

It is assumed that students taking this course have successfully completed all pre-requisite courses or have been granted credit for these courses. Students will be required to be competent in the skills learned in prerequisite courses in order to advance their practice.

Mandatory Preparation (including Blue Card, First Aid currency, CPR certificates) is the responsibility of the student and must be completed prior to commencing Clinical Placement according to the due date / anniversary renewal date specified.

Aims and outcomes

This course aims to provide students with the clinical practice experience required in order to consolidate Midwifery practice skills. The course will also provide a structure for learning in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Midwife Standards for Practice and UQ attributes in order to transition into the role of the graduate midwife.

Students are required to upload their completed Medsafe certificates to the companion Blackboard site under Assessments (clicking on submission link).

Completion of the skills and Mid-point AMSAT will be completed in the student's ePAD.

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 28 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Extension requests are submitted online via my.UQ. Extension requests received in any other way will not be approved. 

Extension guidelines

·      Extension requests should be submitted prior to the assessment deadline.

·      Requests for extensions received after the assessment item submission due date may not be approved. Late requests must include evidence of the reasons for the late request as per the guidelines in my.UQ.

·      The extension granted should be in proportion to the period of illness or disruption caused by the exceptional circumstances and will typically be no more than the specified maximum extension length for each assessment.

·      A maximum of three assessment requests can be submitted for each assessment, and the third request must include an Assessment Management Plan.

·      Students who have been ill or unable to attend class for more than 4 weeks in a semester are advised to carefully consider whether they are capable of successfully completing their courses and may need to consider applying for removal of course.

·      Students who have a disability or a chronic medical condition (including a mental health condition) are encouraged to meet with a Disability Advisor within Student Services to request a Student Access Plan (SAP) with a clause on extension requests. This course has a approved calendar variation. Due to hospital capacity students might start their placement 5 weeks prior to the beginning of semester. Students are expected to be available from 23/6/25- 16/11/25.

 The contact requirements for this semester include: 

• 360 hours clinical hours (45 shifts) or accumulation of 360 hours in a midwifery group practice model
• Attendance at one (1) x Course and Practice requirement lecture
• Attendance at one (1) x employability session
• Attendance at one (1) x whole day workshop with perineal repair and simulation experience
• Attendance at one (1) x 2 hr Preparation for Registration seminar 
• Attendance at contact and reflections sessions five (5) timetabled throughout semester

The sessions are NOT counted in clinical hours.

Explanation of workshops and requirements:

• Course introduction lecture: Attendance at this workshop is highly recommended and will clearly outline the requirements of the course. 
• Employability session : Attendance at this workshop is highly recommended and will provide students with information regarding interviews as well as revision of cover letters and resumes.
• Whole day workshop includes perineal repair and simulation experience. Attendance is at one (1) workshop and you can access your scheduled day via BB in Learning Resources. Attendance is compulsory and contributes to the required program theoretical activities. 
• Contact and reflection sessions: Attendance will provide an opportunity for students to debrief and reflect about practice with their CC and peers.
• Graduate Seminar to celebrate completion of program.

Clinical practice requirements

This learning activity requires mandatory submission of the following documents:

• a clinical time sheet (360 hours) to the ePAD
• completion and submission of all MPEs to the ePAD in live time by the end of your shift
• completion and submission of all remaining CoCE to the ePAD in live time by the end of each individual experience within the CoCE
• Please ensure you have submitted your shifts via the timesheet in your ePAD at the your AMSAT interview for your Practice Educator or preceptor to review. 

Continuity of Care Experience (COCE) information

• Students are required to upload their CoCE via their ePAD in live time by the end of each individual experience within the CoCE.
• All CoCE are required to have the reflection entered for the CoCE to be finalised and completed.

Midwifery Practice Experiences 

At the end of this semester all Midwifery practice experiences need to be completed and include:

• 10 CoCE 
• 100 antenatal episodes of care
• Act as primary accoucheur for 30 women
• Provide direct and active care to a further 10 women throughout 1st stage of labour (these do not include the 30 primary accoucheur births)
• Experience in performing 20 newborn examinations
• Experience in caring for 40 women with complex needs.
• 100 postnatal episodes of care

Scope of Practice

In NUMW3204, students have a dual scope of practice. This means both learned nursing and midwifery skills are able to be performed in this semester. See the clinical Blackboard site for a copy of the scope of practice document. Students must adhere to the NUMW3204 scope of practice at all times while on clinical placement. This requirement addresses the safety of women and babies and students may be removed from placement or risk failing the course if working outside of their scope of practice.
