This course provides students with an overview of the variety of research methods utilised in health research and the skills to determine which research method best answers a research question. Its focus is the development of a research proposal for the purpose of conducting research as part of a thesis.

Welcome to the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours), Bachelor of Midwifery (Honours) course,ᅠResearch Methods & Thesis Preparation.ᅠ This course is designed to provide Honours students with the necessary skills to develop a research proposal relevant to the research question chosen for their research thesis.ᅠ The course is designed to complement NUMW6001 – Advanced Discipline Readings.

As an Honours student you will be expected to read the literature on a variety of research methods utilised in health research and then determine which research method is most appropriate for the research question.ᅠ Under the guidance of your academic advisor/s you will develop a research proposal for your thesis.

Aims and outcomes

To provide you with an overview of the variety of research methods utilised in health research and the skills to determine which research method best answers the research question you have chosen for your research thesis. The course is designed to provide you with one-on-one academic mentoring in order to increase your knowledge of research methodologies and assist you to learn how to write a research proposal.

Task description

Item 1:  Research Proposal 

The aim of this assessment is for students to demonstrate an understanding of the research process. Assessment 1 requires the student to choose a research methodology or design that will answer their research question and provide a justification as to why this design will best address their chosen thesis topic.

The structure of this paper should follow the guidelines of the Research Proposal Template.

Do not underestimate the volume of work required to complete this assessment – regular meetings with your mentor will assist and focus your progress.

 

Submission guidelines

This assessment requires students to submit an electronic version of their assignment via Blackboard.

The anti-plagiarism software Turnitin is being used at UQ. The electronic version of your assignment will be submitted via Blackboard, using the Turnitin software. Work submitted will be subjected to a plagiarism detection process.

Please refer to ITS help if you experience difficulties in submitting your assessment in Blackboard or using Turnitin.

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 14 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

  • Extension requests should be submitted prior to the assessment deadline.
  • Extension requests must state the due date and the due time of the assessment.
  • Requests for extensions received after the assessment item submission due date may not be approved. Late requests must include evidence of the reasons for the late request.
  • The extension granted should be in proportion to the period of illness or disruption caused by the exceptional circumstances and will typically be no more than the specified maximum extension length.
  • Students on a Student Access Plan (SAP) with a clause on extension requests must still adhere to the extensions request policy outlined. Students need to attach the SAP and a note outlining their current situation with the online extension application. A maximum of 7 days will be granted on the basis of an SAP. An extension request beyond 7 days will require additional supporting information as this request will not be considered on the basis of the SAP, but rather additional events (whether they relate to the circumstances of the SAP or not).
Late submission

A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

Task description

**Students need to be available during Exam Block - once scheduled details will be announced on Blackboard***

Item 2:   Presentation of Research Proposal 

Length:  15 minutes presentation followed by 10 minutes of questions. Presentations will be during Exam Week and details provided once finalised. 

This individual oral presentation is based on the Research Proposal and provides the student with the opportunity to present their work within the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work.  Aacademic staff and students of the School will be invited with a member of the academic staff will be invited by the Honours Program Director to review the presentation.  Where students are working interstate or in remote or rural areas the presentation will be delivered via ZOOM.   Assessment criteria remain the same.
