This course introduces students to principles of effective leaders and develops understanding of clinical teaching. The student will examine team dynamics, characteristics of effective healthcare teams and personal leadership styles. The influence of hierarchy and the application of assertive communication and conflict resolution will be considered. Students will identify adult teaching and learning approaches and reflect on contemporary clinical workforce needs and future directions. The development of critical and reflective practice skills and capability to lead change, will equip emerging nurses to engage with workplace learning communities and promote quality healthcare.

This course introduces students to principles of effective leaders and develops an understanding of clinical teaching.ᅠIt will examine adult learning styles and consider their application to the clinical setting. The role of mentoring to support others to self-manage and maximise their performance and personal development will be explored.

There is one face to face lecture for this course in Week 5. The stable content for this course is embedded in the online platform. The course provides face to face IBL's. In semester 2 IBL sessions are conducted on: Monday, Wednesday and Friday (please view UQ public timetable for class times).

Aims and outcomes

This course aims to introduce students to theories of leadership and characteristics of effective teams. It will examine adult learning theories and consider application of these to the clinical setting. The role of mentoring in supporting others to self-manage and maximise their performance and personal development will be investigated.ᅠ

This assessment aims to encourage critical reflection on feedback received during Semester 1, 2024. You will analyse the effectiveness of this feedback, explore a feedback model, and propose improvements in using this model. Additionally, you will identify resources to enhance your nursing practice based on the feedback.

The maximum extension allowed is 28 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Extension requests are submitted online via my.UQ. Extension requests received in any other way will not be approved.

Extension guidelines 

  • Extension requests should be submitted prior to the assessment deadline. 
  • Extension requests must state the due date and the due time of the assessment. 
  • Requests for extensions received after the assessment item submission due date may not be approved. Late requests must include evidence of the reasons for the late request.  
  • The extension granted should be in proportion to the period of illness or disruption caused by the exceptional circumstances and will typically be no more than the specified maximum extension length. 
  • Students on a Student Access Plan (SAP) with a clause on extension requests must still adhere to the extensions request policy outlined. Students need to attach the SAP and a note outlining their current situation with the online extension application. A maximum of 7 days will be granted on the basis of an SAP. An extension request beyond 7 days will require additional supporting information as this request will not be considered on the basis of the SAP, but rather additional events (whether they relate to the circumstances of the SAP or not). 

Outcome of application 

  • Extension requests are generally processed within 2 working days. Students can see the outcome of their application by logging in to my.UQ. 


Late submission

A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

Task description

  • The examination will be through the INSPERA platform and will be held online, on campus and will be invigilated.
  • Mid-semester examinations will be on one of the following dates (Saturday) 31st August, 7th September or 14th September. Student's will be advised of the date once this is released from Central exams. 
  • Examination content will be taken from online learning modules 1 and 2, readings, week 5 lecture and IBL sessions weeks 1-6.

Develop and present a clinical teaching session:

  • Identifying ONE (1) learning need relevant to your clinical placement area.
  • Applying adult learning theories relevant for nurses or midwives related to the identified clinical placement area.
