Students will undertake up to 240 hours of clinical experiences comprised of immersive nursing practice. The placement will provide an opportunity for students to consolidate their knowledge and skills from Years 1 and 2, to effectively manage nursing care within a healthcare context demonstrating culturally responsive care. The focus of this final year is to develop advanced clinical skills including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care. Students will also further develop evidence-based practice and quality improvement skills and consider preparation for graduate employment.

NURS3202 Clinical Practice 5

This course aims to enhance students’ clinical competence, critical thinking, and professional accountability, preparing them for the complexities of contemporary nursing practice. In this course, students will consolidate their knowledge and skills acquired during Years 1 and 2 of the program. They will be required to effectively manage the nursing care of 3–4 individuals in a healthcare setting while demonstrating culturally responsive and patient-centred care.

As the fifth of six clinical practice courses in the Bachelor of Nursing program, this 4-unit course provides students with the opportunity to undertake up to 240 hours of supervised clinical experience. Typically, this will involve approximately 30 x 8-hour shifts, though 12-hour shifts may be undertaken where permitted by the placement site, and may include weekdays, weekends, public holidays inclusive of rotating rosters involving morning, afternoon and night shifts.

Throughout the semester, students must submit evidence of progress during their placement. If additional evidence is deemed necessary, students will be advised by the Course Coordinator. Students who do not meet or maintain a level of performance appropriate to their experience at any point during the semester will be formally notified. A tailored learning plan will then be implemented by the designated Practice Educator, in consultation with the Course Coordinator, to support the student’s development.

In cases where concerns regarding fitness to practise or scope of practice are identified, students may be withdrawn from their placement. This decision will be made at the discretion of the Program Lead, in consultation with the Head of School.
