This course will assist students to develop advanced knowledge of human sciences, differentiate abnormal from normal findings using advanced assessment techniques, interpret diagnostic study results, and use clinical reasoning to formulate management plans for culturally diverse individuals. Students learn to base decisions on clinical judgement, scientific evidence, and client determined outcomes.
This course in the MNP program provides students with the opportunity ᅠto conduct advanced comprehensive and holistic health assessments relevant to a specialist field of nursing practice. Students will learn about physical and behavioural assessment, haematological, biochemical, and radiological assessment. Advanced concepts in pathophysiology will assist them to develop their knowledge of human sciences, differentiate abnormal from normal findings using advanced assessment techniques, interpret diagnostic study results, and use clinical reasoning to formulate management plans for individuals from ᅠculturally diverse backgrounds. Students will learn to base decisions on clinical judgment, scientific evidence and client determined outcomes. Students will work with a clinical mentor in their clinical environment in order to observe and develop advanced skills in the assessment, diagnostic testing and evaluation of results. Teaching material is presented as interactive web-based exercises with independent readings. There will be a joint residential school for NURS7001 & NURS7002 held on campus with teaching and learning activities to facilitateᅠconsolidation of key concepts and skills. Attendance at the course residential school is an expectation of the course.ᅠ
It is essential that students can provide evidence of support from their employer, that their organisation will provide placement for integrated professional practice (IPP), a clinical support team (CST) and a clinical mentor to facilitate the practical part of the course (refer to NURS7007).ᅠ

Aims and outcomes
This course will assist students to develop advanced knowledge of human sciences, differentiate abnormal from normal findings using advanced assessment techniques, interpret diagnostic study results, and use clinical reasoning to formulate management plans for culturally diverse individuals. Students learn to base decisions on clinical judgment, scientific evidence and client-determined outcomes and demonstrate critical thinking skills through case based scenarios.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
LO1.
Demonstrate advanced knowledge of human sciences and expanded skills in diagnostic reasoning.
LO2.
Differentiate between normal, variation of normal and abnormal findings in clinical assessment.
LO3.
Assess a clients stable, unpredictable and complex health care needs in a timely manner through synthesis and prioritization of historical and available data.
LO4.
Make decisions about use of investigative options that are judicious, client-focused and informed by clinical findings.
LO5.
Demonstrate confidence in own ability to identify normal and abnormal states of health through synthesis and interpretation of assessment information including client history, physical findings and results of investigations to inform differential diagnoses.
LO6.
Make informed and autonomous decisions about preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic responses and interventions that are based on clinical judgment, scientific evidence, and client determined outcomes.
LO7.

Task description
All students will be allocated into 1 of the 4 groups: Cardiology / Respiratoy / Endocrine / Neurology.
Cardiology / Respiratory / Endocrine / Neurology group discussions will proceed from Week 2 - Week 5 (4 weeks duration).
Active participation in online group discussion within your assigned study group around the presented case study (cardiac / respiratory / endocrine / neurology). You are to participate in an asynchronous discussion following the SOAP structure. How do you interpret the provided signs and symptoms and what differential diagnosis are you suspecting, justify why you suspect them. The discussion will then flow on to identify what diagnostic interventions you see as relevant and what you will achieve with them. When results are known, the discussion will focus on developing a problem list. The last step is to develop a management plan that addresses the problem list. All discussions will be monitored and moderated by the course coordinator. The agreed management plan has to be presented as a document on the discussion board. You will actively participate in your assigned group activity and discussion, and also read the information from the other group discussion activity.
Submission guidelines
All courses require students to submit an electronic version of their assignment via Blackboard.
The anti-plagiarism software Turnitin is being used at UQ. The electronic version of your assignment will be submitted via Blackboard, using the Turnitin software. Work submitted will be subjected to a plagiarism detection process.

Deferral or extension
You may be able to apply for an extension.
The maximum extension allowed is 28 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.
Applying for an extension
Extension requests are submitted online via my.UQ. Extension requests received in any other way will not be approved.
Information about applying for an extension can be found on my.UQ.
Extension guidelines
- Extension requests should be submitted prior to the assessment deadline.
- Extension requests must state the due date and the due time of the assessment.
- Requests for extensions received after the assessment item submission due date may not be approved. Late requests must include evidence of the reasons for the late request.
- The extension granted should be in proportion to the period of illness or disruption caused by the exceptional circumstances and will typically be no more than the specified maximum extension length.
- Students on a Student Access Plan (SAP) with a clause on extension requests must still adhere to the extensions request policy outlined. Students need to attach the SAP and a note outlining their current situation with the online extension application. A maximum of 7 days will be granted on the basis of an SAP. An extension request beyond 7 days will require additional supporting information as this request will not be considered on the basis of the SAP, but rather additional events (whether they relate to the circumstances of the SAP or not).
Outcome of application
- Extension requests are generally processed within 2 working days. Students can see the outcome of their application by logging in to my.UQ.
Late submission
A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

You should identify one confirmed diagnosis and also identify a problem list for the specific patient.
Part B - Will require you to develop a holistic management plan for the patient in the case study.
Within the case study you are asked to demonstrate your clinical decision making processes for the patient and their symptoms. Your responses will provide evidence on how you are developing your critical thinking skills. You will be provided with a marking guide with details of what is required in this assessment item.
