This course will assist students to develop advanced knowledge and skills related to assessment and management of people with ongoing, complex and, unpredictable illnesses. The impact of issues such as life span, ageing, culture and economics on patient management will be considered.
This is a core course that represents foundational knowledge in the Master of Nurse Practitioner program and is offered concurrently with NURS7001 Advanced Nursing Practice 1. In addition to working through online based course materials, students will spend a minimum of 96 hours (or 8 hours per week) in the clinical settings approved by their course coordinator, completing Integrated Professional Practice (IPP), under the supervision and mentorship of their CST, to observe and develop the advanced practice skills of the nurse practitioner. The impact of issues such as life span, ageing, culture, and economics on patient management will be considered. The course allows for expansion of knowledge for application in working with clients, families, and colleagues in clinical practice. Collaboration with other health care providers is fostered with emphasis on the coordination and continuity of client care. A joint residential school will be facilitated for NURS7001 & NURS7002, in week one of semester for all students.ᅠ
ᅠ
It is essential that the student provide evidence of support from their employer, that their organisation will provide opportunity for clinical practice, an approved clinical support team (CST), and a clinical mentor to facilitate the practical components of the course. The clinical mentor is either a nurse practitioner, with at least one-year full time experience as a nurse practitioner, or a medical practitioner with a specialisation in a relevant clinical area i.e. cardiologist or GP. The CST should at a minimum cover nursing, medicine and pharmacology. Suitable members of the CST are nurse practitioner, medical practitioner, and pharmacist.

Task description
The oral presentation (Viva voce) should refer to a complex episode of care for a patient you have managed this semester. The presentation should summarise the history of presenting illness, review of systems and physical examination and justify the diagnosis/es with appropriate evidence and pathophysiology. A complete management plan should be presented with the major focus on your assessment and review of systems and physical examination.
The presentation should allow you to exhibit a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of pathology tests, diagnostic interventions and the findings found within the physical examinations. This data should be used in your diagnostic reasoning to provide up to three differential diagnoses, a final confirmed diagnosis and the development of a problem list and management plan.
Questions from the examination team will explore your knowledge in greater detail. Marks will be awarded for a professional presentation that includes appropriate references. Students should select the case carefully; this will require the presentation of a complex episode of care in order to demonstrate the required competencies.
This case cannot be one you have submitted in this or any other course within this program.
Oral Presentation to be given in own clinical environment: discuss organisation / invitations with clinical and academic mentor in sufficient time.
Length: 20 minute presentation, with 15 minutes question time.
An accompanying power-point presentation outlining the key aspects of your case is to be submitted 1 week prior to your scheduled Viva.
Submission of PowerPoint via NURS7002 Blackboard page.

Integrated Professional Practice:
ᅠIf at any time during enrolment in this course, a student has difficulty in meeting the clinical requirements of the course, it is their responsibility to raise this as soon as practical with their academic mentor so that a resolution to any issues can take place with the clinical facility.ᅠ Each hour of IPP for the duration of the program must be signed off as completed, by a designated and UQ approved member of the students clinical support team. ᅠIn the case that this does not occur this will result in an ᅠincomplete grade ᅠfor the course.ᅠ
All times stated in relation ᅠto assessments in the Course Profile are referring to AEST. ᅠStudents residing outside the AEST zone have ᅠto carefully consider any time differences to avoid late submissions.
School convention for academic writing and referencing, ᅠand rules in relation to word count/ limit can be found here: ᅠhttps://nmsw.uq.edu.au/assessment/referencing.
Hurdle requirement:
As the Viva-voce is a hurdle assessment, students who do not achieve ᅠa pass mark (≥25 marks) are entitled to a resit ᅠof the Viva-voce. The Course Coordinator will inform the student in writing about the date, time and place for the resit. A student whoᅠ resits ᅠthe Viva-voce cannot achieve higher than a pass mark. A student who does not perform the Viva-voce at the stated date, time and place will not be offered another opportunity.ᅠ
