This course will assist students to develop their own framework for advanced practice, clinical decision making, and leadership in multidisciplinary teams. This framework development will assist students to critically analyse their nursing practice in specialist settings. Students will learn the role and conduct of the quality audit in the practice setting.

This course provides students with the opportunity to develop their own conceptual frameworks for advanced practice, clinical decision-making and leadership in multidisciplinary teams. This course consolidates foundational knowledge in the program and builds on skills developed in earlier courses. In addition to working through evidenced based course materials, students will spend 96 hours (or 8 hours per week) in clinical settings approved by their course coordinator, under the supervision and mentorship of members of the students clinical support teams, to observe and develop the advanced practice skills of the nurse practitioner. Students will be required to develop and defend a conceptual framework for practice that meets their practice needs and context, and is located within a nursing model of care. ᅠThis framework development will assist students to critically analyse their nursing practice in specialist settings within a meta-speciality. Students will learn the role and conduct of the quality audit in the practice setting. Teaching material is presented as interactive web-based exercises with independent clinical journaling activities and readings.

It is essential that the candidates can provide evidence of support from their employer, that their organisation will provide placement for integrated professional practice, a clinical support team (CST) and a clinical mentor to facilitate the practical part of the course.

Task description

As contemporary healthcare strategy looks to utilise professionals to their full scope of practice, it is vital that Nurse Practitioners are acutely aware of not only the clinical facets of their roles but, more importantly, the value adding and contributing actions that need to be implemented to ensure long term sustainability. The development of a Conceptual Framework for the Nurse Practitioner outlines the systemic process to ensure the essential elements of clinical practice, governance, evaluation, and stakeholder engagement.

The aim of this assessment is for you to build a Conceptual Framework to implement the role of a Nurse Practitioner within practice. This should be focused on your area of clinical speciality and incorporate essential stakeholder engagement throughout the development phase.

Part A - The Proposal

This stage involves you completing a proposal template for a Conceptual Framework for the Nurse Practitioner role within your area of specialty. This will include content around the context, aims, proposed model of care, governance, and audit. In addition, this proposal should contain detail on the professional opportunity of the role for the organisation.

This proposal should provide the detail to support a 5 minute proposal pitch to an appropriate executive stakeholder within your service; providing them with clear understanding of your intended aims.

This proposal will then be used (by the executive) to provide feedback to the student around role development, strategic priorities, governance, and operational concerns.

It is vital that you engage an executive within this process as the feedback received will guide the development of your Conceptual Framework submission and ongoing career development as a Nurse Practitioner.

  • The template is to be populated using the provided headings in point form (as a guide 500 words).
  • By week 4 you are required to meet with your executive ad pitch your proposal for the Nurse Practitioner role.
  • Feedback received will guide and influence the development of the final submisssion of the Conceptual Framework.

Word limit for Part A will not be included in Part B.

Part B - Conceptual Framework

Students are to develop a Conceptual Framework for the Nurse Practitioner role within their clinical specialty, with reference to evidence based practice and building on the feedback received from the proposal outlining;

  • Contect and aim of the proposed role
  • Key strategic priorities
  • Governance processes to be utilised (opertaion & clinical)
  • The chosen model of care which reflects the Nurse Practitioner standards of practice and in line with a chosen theoretical framework
  • Inclusive of the Nurse Practitioner quality and safety guidelines
  • Evaluation processes and audit
  • A diagrammatic reflection of the proposed conceptual framework.

Task description

The aim of this presentation is to allow students to demonstrate an integrated approach to the management of a complex patient in their care. The patient must have one or more comorbidities and a minimum of three prescribed medications. The episode of care may cover a specific period of time or reflect an ongoing management, but should refer to a patient who the student has cared for in this semester of study, and for whom the student has taken a leading role in their assessment and management. Evidence of a collaborative approach, appropriate clinical communication and appropriate reference to the literature is required.

The presentation should summarise the history of presenting illness, review of systems, including physical examination, and justify the diagnose/is with appropriate evidence from investigations and pathophysiology. A problem list is to be developed and addressed in a complete management plan with the major focus on your professional competence and clinical leadership as a Nurse Practitioner.

The presentation should allow you to exhibit a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of lab test, diagnostics interventions, and findings during physical examination. These data should be used in your diagnostic reasoning leading up to three differential diagnosis, confirmed diagnosis, and development of a complete management plan.

Questions from the markers and audience will explore your knowledge in greater detail. Marks will be awarded for a professional presentation that includes appropriate language, use of correct terminology and adequate references.

You should select the case carefully; this will require the presentation of a complex episode of care for a patient that has at least one comorbidity and a minimum of three prescribed medications in order to demonstrate the required competencies.

This can not be a case used or submitted in any other courses within this program.
