To develop independence, creativity and critical thought through the evaluation of research relating to nutrition and exercise to health and sports performance.
This course will focus on the biochemical, physiological and behavioural concepts underpinning the relationship between nutrition and exercise performance. Students will learn how the requirements for energy, fluid, macronutrients and micronutrients are changed when individuals undertake exercise training. Students will consider how the intake of different nutrients can facilitate improved training adaptation, recovery, performance and well-being. The effects of different dietary supplements and ergogenic aids on exercise performance will also be discussed. Students will develop independence, creativity and critical thought in the evaluation of research relating nutrition and exercise performance.

Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Describe how macronutrients and micronutrients are used by the body during exercise.
LO2.
Discuss how the requirements for energy, fluid, macronutrients and micronutrients are altered in individuals undertaking exercise training.
LO3.
Explain the concepts of energy availability and relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S).
LO4.
Articulate how hydration status influences exercise performance and discuss the effects of different beverage components on fluid replacement after exercise.
LO5.
Discuss the effects of different sports foods, dietary supplements and ergogenic aids on exercise performance.
LO6.
Explain how age, gender and disability can influence nutrition considerations for exercising individuals.
LO7.
Critically assess and review published information on specific nutrition and exercise topics in order to develop recommendations for the use of nutrition to enhance exercise performance, recovery and/or adaptation.

Deferral or extension
You may be able to apply for an extension.
The maximum extension allowed is 28 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.
Where an online quiz that is available to students for a period of more than 24 hours, and you are unable to complete the quiz during the period the quiz is available, you may apply for an extension of the online quiz. All supporting documentation or information for an extension to the online quiz should cover the entire period the quiz is open.
Late submission
A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

Task description
Students will be required to write a critical review of literature on a specific nutrition and exercise topic. Students will also be required to make recommendations for sports nutrition practice. Further details will be provided on Blackboard. Length 2000 words.
