Introduction to occupational performance and exploration of human psychological and social functioning across the lifespan. Analyses their impact on the process of growth and development.

OCTY1203 continues on from first semester courses to build a foundation for the development of professional identity, and knowledge and skills in core occupational therapy practice.

This course introduces students to the range of personal and environmental factors that influence occupational performance and occupational roles across the lifespan. The Canadian Model of Occupational Performance and Engagement (CMOP-E)ᅠwill be used to guide an exploration of the changes which occur within the person (biomechanical, sensory motor cognitive, intrapersonal, interpersonal) from infancy to late adulthood, and the diverse environments in whichᅠoccupational roles are enacted in these successive life-stages. Students will have opportunities to explore and reflect upon the dynamic relationship between occupational performance and change across personal and environmental domains.ᅠ

Students will develop practical skills in observation, analysis, and the assessment of occupational performance through tutorial activities and simulated fieldwork. Communication and activity analysis skills introduced in semester one will be integrated and applied thoughout this course. In particular, the simulated fieldwork sessions will focus on the development of skills inᅠcommunicating an understanding of occupational performance.ᅠᅠ

OCTY1203 runs in parallel with OCTY7810, however, all tutorials and fieldwork simulation activities will be separateᅠto meet the unique learning needs of each student cohort.

Aims and outcomes

This course aims to develop understanding of the concept of occupational performance at different stages of development and thus provides a foundation for occupational therapy practice.ᅠ

Aspects of human biomechanical, sensory motor, cognitive, intrapersonal, and interpersonalᅠdevelopment will be examined alongside environmental factors (sensory, social physical and cultural context)ᅠwhich influence development. The dynamic interaction between personal and environmental factors will be discussed in relation to the acquisition of skills, occupational performance, and occupational roles across the lifespan.

Students will develop skills in assessing and analysing occupational performance and communicating the outcomes of this assessment to key stakeholders. Learning activities in the course provide opportunities to develop professional behaviour and skills required for ongoing professional development, including working collaboratively with peers, making evaluative judgements, and self-regulating learning.ᅠᅠ

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

LO1.

Apply models (including the CMOP-E) to identify the elements of the person, environment and occupation which change across the lifespan, and explain how these changes are linked with occupational performance in occupational roles.

LO2.

Explain how life circumstances (including health conditions and environmental factors - historical and current) impact occupational performance and roles.

LO3.

Assess aspects of occupational performance following the protocol and scoring instructions of a standardised developmental assessment tool, and interpret findings of this assessment.

LO4.

Work collaboratively with peers to analyse and assess occupational performance.

LO5.

Convey the outcomes of the assessment of occupational performance to relevant stakeholders both verbally and in a written format, using professional language and expression appropriate to the audience.

LO6.

Apply, demonstrate and evaluate strategies related to communicating openly, effectively and respectfully with peers and professional colleagues; as well as demonstrate skills and strategies related to working collaboratively with colleagues; and with relevant stakeholders.

Task description

Two hour prac sessions will be held in weeks 1 and 3. Prac sessions must be attended as they count towards overall fieldwork hours. 

Students will be required to write and submit an assessment summary report. This task will be supported by two prac sessions held in weeks 1 and 3. The prac sessions will develop skills in assessing occupational performance of a young child, and administering, scoring and interpreting results from a standardised assessment. Students will record their work during the prac sessions using worksheets, in small groups. 

Participation within the learning activities within the Prac will form the foundation for the written report and oral viva. 

The Written Report will be worth 35% of your overall mark and will be submitted as a pair via Learn.uq by 4pm Friday Week 6. 

Note: This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Submission guidelines

Report and Reflection on Group Work is to be submitted via Learn.uq. Only one individual from the group/pair required to upload assessment item.

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 14 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Extension will apply to both group members.

Late submission

A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

The oral viva will be completed individually via zoom, and involves discussing your written report with a 'clinical educator' and/or parent (examiner).

Final marks falling between whole percentages will be rounded to the nearest whole percentage. Tie-breaking will be conducted using the round half up method whereby half-way values are always rounded up, meaning, for example, that 89.5% and above will be rounded to 90% and 89.49% and below will be rounded down to 89%.


IMPORTANT NOTE: This course contains ‘must pass’ assessment items (as indicated above). You must pass the Written report AND Prac (fieldwork simulation) and Developmental Assessment to pass this course overall and , i.e. even if your final percentage mark is 55% or higher the individual ‘must pass’ assessment items must have been passed.

Resubmission/Resit of Assessment Itemsᅠ

The School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences supports the concept of resubmission or resitting of failed assessment items in specific and defined circumstances. In this course, the Written report is eligible for consideration of the resubmission/resit option if the assessment item was completed on time.

After resubmission or resit, the maximum result is a pass mark for that assessment component. Students who are granted a resubmission/resitᅠfor an assessment item and do not submit by/attend onᅠthe scheduled date will not be granted an extension/permitted to reschedule the assessment.

Students will be eligible for a maximum of 1 resubmission or resit option for this course.
