This course will provide students with an introduction and overview of the fundamental stages of the occupational therapy process, which begins from the point of receiving an occupational therapy referral, assessment, intervention and outcome evaluation. Professional skills that are fundamental to the occupational therapy process will be facilitated to prepare occupational therapy students for subsequent learning experiences in other occupational therapy courses.

This course introduces the occupational therapy process, which entails a series of foundational stages that occupational therapists follow when interacting with clients across different populations. The course builds upon knowledge of the theoretical foundation gained from the first semester. Students will be introduced to each of these stages from the point of receiving an occupational therapy referral, through to the process of information gathering, assessment, goal setting, intervention planning, evaluation and documentation. There will be a "Clinician Spotlight" series with invited clinicians with different areas of expertise. Students will develop practical skills essential for the occupational therapy process, specifically in information gathering and the assessment of upper limb muscle strength and joint range of motion. Students will also be introduced to evidence-based practice and its role in occupational therapy practice. OCTY1205 runs parallel to OCTY7809. The online lecture series will be delivered jointly to students in both courses however, all other learning activities will be separate to meet the unique learning needs of each course.

Aims and outcomes

This course aims to provide an introduction to the occupational therapy process. Students will acquire foundational knowledge on the process that occupational therapists undertake from receiving a referral, to gathering information, assessing a client, planning and delivering interventions, and evaluating outcomes. Clinical based scenarios will be used to enhance students’ understanding of the process, and how theory informs clinical practice. It also aims to introduce students to evidence-based practice, where students will learn about how occupational therapists seek evidence to support clinical practice. This course also aims to equip students with fundamental skills for information gathering and in evaluating upper limb muscle strength and range of motion, which is a core occupational therapy assessment skill.

By participating in learning activities and practical learning sessions, including tutorials and practical classes, students will acquire knowledge skills that can be applied in occupational therapy practice.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

LO1.

Identify and describe the occupational therapy process and each of its stages, from the point of receiving a referral to the conclusion of occupational therapy services.

LO2.

Describe how theory informs occupational therapy practice.

LO3.

Apply and describe the application of the occupational therapy process in clinical practice.

LO4.

Describe evidence-based practice and its application in the occupational therapy process.

LO5.

Demonstrate foundational skills in gathering information from a simulated patient by applying occupational therapy theory and effective communication skills.

LO6.

Demonstrate foundational skills in upper limb range of motion assessment and manual muscle testing, and articulate how their role in the occupational therapy process.

LO7.

Demonstrate professional skills by working collaboratively and responsibly with peers as part of a team and professional communication.

Task description

There will be 3 online quizzes in Weeks 3, 5 and 8. The quiz questions will be focused on assessing content associated with students’ learning in the weeks preceding the quizzes. To support students’ preparation for the quizzes, guiding study questions will be provided a week before each quiz.

Submission guidelines

Criteria, Marking and Submission: Please refer to Learn.UQ to access information on the Task Assignment, Marking Criteria and Submission for this assessment item

Plagiarism and Artificial Intelligence: While students may discuss their responses during preparations preceding the quizzes, students need to be mindful that is the online quizzes are individual assignments. Responses that are submitted must be distinctly different. Students must not plagiarise teaching or learning materials, and must be able to demonstrate understanding of their own responses to the quiz questions. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

All assignments will be put through Turnitin to identify indicators of potential plagiarism, which in turn may then be investigated. Turnitin has released a tool to indicate the probability of text being produced by a generative AI tool. While it doesn’t determine misconduct, it can provide an indication of potential misconduct, which may be further investigated.

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 14 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Requests for a deadline extension can be requested for this assessment item. Please apply for an extension request via my.UQ > my.UQ Dashboard > my.Requests and provide evidence of circumstance, as soon as it becomes evident that an extension is needed. Extension requests must be submitted no later than the assessment item submission date. Further information regarding what constitutes an acceptable reason for an extension is listed on the my.UQ website: Applying for an extension - my.UQ - University of Queensland. Please also email the Course Coordinator to advise of the exam extension request.

Late submission

Exams submitted after the end of the submission time will incur a late penalty.

Penalties will be applied unless there is sufficient evidence (e.g. screenshots, photos, or emails from AskUs) that the late submission was beyond the control of the student, for example, if there were technical issues that were unavoidable. Requests for removal of the late penalty for an online exam is made using the extension of assessment due date request.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

This course contains ‘Must Pass’ assessment items. Students must pass the Simulated Patient Interview, Practical Viva (≥ 65%) and Case Assignment items to pass this course overall; students who receive a final mark of 55% or higher but did not pass one or more of the "Must Pass" items will receive a Grade 3.

Supplementary assessment

Supplementary assessment is available for this course.

Additional assessment information

Use of Generative AI in assessments

Assessment tasks in this course evaluate students' abilities, skills, and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT. Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Resubmission/Resit of Assessment Items

The School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences supports the concept of resubmission or resitting of failed assessment items in specific and defined circumstances. In this course, the Simulated Patient Interview Assessment is eligible for consideration of the resubmit option if the assessment item was completed on time. After resit, the maximum result is a pass mark for that assessment component. Students who are granted a resitᅠfor an assessment item and do not attend onᅠthe scheduled date will not be permitted to reschedule the assessment.

Submitting assessment in Inspera

Inspera Assessment will be used for the Online Quiz Series and Case Assignment Submission. Details about Inspera Assessment including an introduction to Inspera functionality and where to go for support are available https://web.library.uq.edu.au/library-services/it/assessments-inspera.
