This course will provide students with an introduction to occupational therapy, including the occupational therapy philosophy, history of the profession and theoretical underpinnings. It will also overview of the fundamental stages of the occupational therapy process, which begins from the point of receiving an occupational therapy referral, assessment, intervention and outcome evaluation. It will also introduce students to Activity Analysis as a core occupational therapy skill.

This is a foundational course introducing graduate students to occupations, key occupational therapy theories and models, and how these inform occupational therapy practice. It will introduce graduate students to the occupational therapy process, which entails a series of foundational stages that occupational therapists follow when interacting with clients across different populations. Students will be introduced to each of these stages from the point of receiving an occupational therapy referral, through to the process of information gathering, assessment, goal setting, intervention planning, evaluation and documentation. Students will be introduced to evidence-based practice and its role in occupational therapy practice. Students will also develop foundational skills in activity analysis, a core occupational therapy skill underpinning practice.

Aims and outcomes

This course aims to provide an introduction to the occupational therapy profession and process. Students will acquire foundational knowledge on history and philosophy underpinning occupational therapy, and key theories. In addition, it aims to introduce students to the process that occupational therapists undertake (i.e., different stages) from receiving a referral, to gathering information, assessing a client, planning and delivering interventions, and evaluating outcomes. Clinical-based scenarios will be used to enhance students’ understanding of the process, and how theory informs clinical practice. In addition, there are "Clinician Spotlight" spotlights that will feature across the course where clinicians from different areas of practice will share their experiences. This course also aims to introduce students to evidence-based practice, where students will learn about how occupational therapists seek evidence to support clinical practice. By participating in learning activities and practical learning sessions, including tutorials and practical classes, students will acquire knowledge and skills that can be applied in occupational therapy practice.

Task description

There will be 3 online quizzes in Weeks 3, 5 and 8. The quiz questions will be focused on assessing content associated with students’ learning in the weeks preceding the quizzes. To support students’ preparation for the quizzes, guiding study questions will be provided a week before each quiz.

Submission guidelines

Criteria, Marking and Submission: Please refer to Learn.UQ to access information on the Task Assignment, Marking Criteria and Submission for this assessment item

Plagiarism and Artificial Intelligence: While students may discuss their responses during preparations preceding the quizzes, students need to be mindful that is the online quizzes are individual assignments. Responses that are submitted must be distinctly different. Students must not plagiarise teaching or learning materials, and must be able to demonstrate understanding of their own responses to the quiz questions. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

All assignments will be put through Turnitin to identify indicators of potential plagiarism, which in turn may then be investigated. Turnitin has released a tool to indicate the probability of text being produced by a generative AI tool. While it doesn’t determine misconduct, it can provide an indication of potential misconduct, which may be further investigated.

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 14 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

A penalty of 1 grade for each 24 hour period from time submission is due will apply for up to 7 days. After 7 days you will receive a mark of 0.

Penalties will be applied unless there is sufficient evidence (e.g. screenshots, photos, or emails from AskUs) that the late submission was beyond the control of the student, for example, if there were technical issues that were unavoidable. Requests for removal of the late penalty for an online exam is made using the extension of assessment due date request.

Supplementary assessment

Supplementary assessment is available for this course.

Additional assessment information

Use of Generative AI in assessments

Assessment tasks in this course evaluate students' abilities, skills, and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT. Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Resubmission/Resit of Assessment Items

The School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences supports the concept of resubmission or resitting of failed assessment items in specific and defined circumstances. In this course, the Standardised Patient Interview Assessment is eligible for consideration of the resubmit option if the assessment item was completed on time. After resubmitting, the maximum result is a pass mark for that assessment component. Students who are granted a resubmit and do not attend on the scheduled date will not be permitted to reschedule the assessment.

Submitting assessment in Inspera

Inspera Assessment will be used for the Online Quiz Series and Case Assignment Submission. Details about Inspera Assessment including an introduction to Inspera functionality and where to go for support are available https://web.library.uq.edu.au/library-services/it/assessments-inspera.
