This course is designed to support graduate students to develop their understanding of the long term impact of both physical and mental health conditions on occupational performance and participation. Students will develop knowledge and skills in information gathering and service provision relevant to these conditions.

This course is designed to develop students' understanding of chronic conditions, including physical,ᅠcognitive, and mental health conditions.ᅠStudent also learnᅠthe impact of these chronic conditions on adults' occupational performance and participation. Students will develop knowledge and skills in information gathering, service provision, and clinical reasoning. Course material will be provided by way of lectures andᅠtutorials. The course will be taught by the course coordinator(s) and by external staff from pathology (School of Biomedical Sciences) and psychiatry (School of Medicine). Some additional guest speakers (with backgrounds in different areas of occupational therapy) will also feature in this course. In addition, this course includes a sessional placement that provides hands-on experiential learning with the older adult population.

Aims and outcomes

This course aimsᅠto develop students' understanding of chronic conditions (both physical and mental health conditions) and the impact of these chronic conditions on adults' occupational performance and participation. It also aims toᅠdevelop students' knowledge and skills in information gathering, service provision, and clinical reasoning.

Identify common pathologies and clinical issues that underpin common chronic health conditions

Use information from theories and models, clinical knowledge, research, and client information to select appropriate information-gathering and service-provision approaches for adults with chronic conditions, and explain the application of these processes in practice

Use models, theories, and assessment information to plan, provide and evaluate occupational therapy for older adults.

Task description

This exam will be delivered in Inspera Assessment and completed on your personal laptop on campus.


This is a 1 hour, in-person, closed-book, computer-based exam conducted using Inspera. The in-semester exam assesses knowledge and skills learned in the lectures and tutorials from weeks 1-6 (including any readings lecturers/tutors indicate are assessable). It will include multiple-choice and short-answer questions. The exam will be held during the usual lecture time (note: there will not be any lectures or tutorials for this course in the week of the in-semester exam).

Task description

Students will undertake 7 weeks x 3.5 hours of sessional placement (including an on-site tutorial each week). This sessional placement involves working with a person in late adulthood. Students will support an older adult to identify and work towards goals that are meaningful to them. Students will need to demonstrate professional behaviour throughout this sessional placement and complete a sessional placement report. These reports will be based on the time spent with the older adult and should draw on information learned during the sessional placement tutorials and information learned more broadly in the occupational therapy program.

4 (Pass) 55 - 64

Final marks falling between whole percentages will be rounded to the nearest whole percentage. Tie-breaking will be conducted using the round half-up method whereby half-way values are always rounded up, meaning, for example, that 89.5% and above will be rounded to 90% and 89.49% and below will be rounded down to 89%.


IMPORTANT NOTE: This course contains ‘must pass’ assessment items. You must pass ALL 'must pass' assessmentᅠitems to pass this course overall, i.e. even if your final percentage mark is 55% or higher eachᅠindividual ‘must pass’ assessment itemᅠmust have been passed.

Resubmission/Resit of Assessment Items

The School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences supports the concept of resubmission or resitting of failed assessment items in specific and defined circumstances. In this course, the Sessional Placement Report is eligible for consideration of the resubmission option if the assessment item was submitted on time.

After resubmission, the maximum result is a pass mark for that assessment component. Students who are granted a resubmission for an assessment item and do not submit by the scheduled date will not be granted an extension.

Students will be eligible for a maximum of ONE resubmission or resit option for this course.

Sessional placement orientation

2x 2.5hr in person tutorials will provide orientation and introductory information to support the sessional placement. These sessional placement orientation hours are mandatory and will count towards the 1000 hours required by WFOT before graduating the program. Students will be required to complete relevant make-up tasks if unable to attend due to acceptable reasons.

Fieldwork

Sessional placement

Students will participate in 7 weeks x 3.5 hours of fieldwork in a setting with older adults. This fieldwork time includes an on-site tutorial each week, time with an older adult, and time to plan and document the OT process used with the resident/client. The majority of the placement settings will require students to attend from 09:00-12:30, however due to organisational requirements, one setting will require the allocated students to attend from 08:00-11:30. These sessional placement hours are mandatory and will count towards the 1000 hours required by WFOT before graduating the program. Students will be required to complete relevant make-up tasks if unable to attend due to acceptable reasons.


Students are responsible for ensuring they meet the compliance requirements for their placement sites. Students will not be allocated to a placement site until all compliance documents are provided.
