This course focuses on developing understanding of basic therapeutic pharmacological principles, quality use of medications and the nurse role in safe medication practices. There is an emphasis on mechanisms of action, physiological effects, clinical indication, pharmacokinetics and adverse effects of drugs. A key component is the role of the nurse or midwife in safely administering medications.
Medication management is an important nursing and midwifery activity. Safe practice in the management of medications prevents adverse outcomes. Safe management includes understanding the therapeutic action of drugs, the reason for their use and the effects of their use. Registered nurses and midwives use their clinical judgment to decide if mediations should be given or withheld, commensurate with the person’s health status. Nurses and midwives also have a role in educating patients and consumers about medications. In administering medications registered nurses and midwives must be able to safely administer medications and be accountable for outcomes.

Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
LO1.
Explain principles that determine the absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of drugs.
LO2.
Discuss how medications administered for their clinical use act on their target(s) to produce both beneficial pharmacological actions and adverse drug reactions.
LO3.
Demonstrate how the mechanisms of actions and clinical use of medications affect the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, renal, respiratory and nervous systems when administered to patients.
LO4.
Demonstrate the mechanisms of actions and clinical use of antibiotic, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and analgesic medications, guide therapeutic use when administered to patients.
LO5.
Apply the principles that determine the quality use of medicines to patient therapy in healthcare including complementary and alternative medicines.
LO6.
Demonstrate the legal, ethical and professional requirements associated with quality use of medicine are part of safe nursing and midwifery practice.

Task description
During each workshop students will be working in small groups on an Inquiry Based Learning Case study. These cases will involve exploring the case, identifying any medication related issues and a plan to resolve any issues. Students will need to work together to apply knowledge of clinical therapeutics and pharmacology, as well as applying any legal, ethical and professional practices associated with quality use of medicines to ensure medication safety principles are upheld.
Each group will present to a different group, who will use a peer assessment tool to provide peer assessment and feedback. This will all take place in the workshop. Peer assessment sheets are to be handed in by each group and submitted during the workshop. Each group member will receive the same mark.
There are THREE workshops during this course in weeks 6, 8 and 10. Each peer assessment will be marked out of 5. Therefore, the total weighting of these workshops will be 15%
This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). Task description
Students will identify a case from their experiential placements that involves medication administration. These cases will be de-identified and presented as a case study and reflective piece. The case study should include relevant background, clinical details, medication history and medications administered. The case study should include reflections and any medication safety and quality use of medication principles. The role of the nurse/midwife in upholding legal and professional qualities should be outlined. The case study and reflections are to be delivered in a power point presentation and a video uploaded using the link provided in Blackboard
