This Course is the first in the series of only three QUM courses that teach new prescription medicine content within our Program (2nd semester in Year 2, and both semesters in Year 3). Students will learn contemporary practice approaches in the areas of central nervous, gastrointestinal, and endocrine systems, further developing their skills, knowledge, and professional attributes as `practitioners-in-training'. They will build their individual capacity for learning and enhance their employability through a variety of Course teachings - acquisition of key core knowledge, practice considerations around QUM, optimising communication and interpersonal skills, critical thinking, problem solving, and participation in experiential learning (community and hospital pharmacy placements).

PHRM2012 - Quality Use of Medicines A2 -ᅠcovers the management of a range of conditions, particularly in terms of pharmaceutical care within theᅠpharmacy setting. ThisᅠCourse builds on Year 1 learning (content knowledge and skills), advancing students understanding about the: use of pharmacotherapy in the treatment of specific health conditions;ᅠoptimal medication management and health care for individual patients; andᅠprofessional and legal aspects of Pharmacy Practiceᅠin relation to current legislation. The courseᅠwill develop students professional skillsᅠin medication fulfilment (dispensing and supply of medicines) and inᅠinteracting/communication with patients. Structured tutorials and experiential learning opportunities (placements)ᅠprovide students an opportunity to practiceᅠskills and apply content knowledgeᅠgained from lectures and learning resources (e.g., prescribed texts), facilitating the development of students' professionalism and attributes, enhancing their employability. Per University policy, aᅠtotal student workloadᅠof 10 - 12 hours per week (including class contact time) is expected to ensure satisfactory progress in this 2-unit Course.

Task description

Task description

Student MUST complete the requirements of Community and Hospital Placement outlined below – please see BlackBoard for more details.

Community and Hospital Placements are HURDLE Assessments. To pass PHRM2012 students must obtain marks equivalent to a TOTAL of at least 50%, comprising:

1.    the SUM of ALL graded items, and

2.    a Pass has been achieved in all of the REQUIRED non-graded assessment items.

A. Community Placement (HURDLE Assessment)

The Community Pharmacy Placement is a compulsory component of PHRM2012. Students will complete a total of minimum 20 hours (maximum 25) of Community Placement over 4-5 weeks. Community Pharmacy Placement Site allocations are nominated by students and subsequently approved by the Placements Team in InPlace. Students must check in InPlace to see if their Community Pharmacy Placement Site has been approved before they can attend their nominated Community Pharmacy Placement Site. Students MUST meet the following three requirements to PASS PHRM2012. However, only the 5 Reflective Task will provide 20% weight of the Course grade.

  1. Planned Placement Attendance: The planned placement attendance MUST be completed BEFORE the compulsory Community Pharmacy Placement can commence. For health and safety reasons, you MUST NOT start your placement until you have submitted your completed pre-placement forms so that they can be cleared/approved by the School's Placement Team.
  2. Placement Evaluation (Work based assessment): At the end of the placement, the student MUST initiate the evaluation process by uploading a scanned copy of their completed formative Student Progress and Assessment (SPA) form containing the Preceptor's feedback to the ePortfolio. Following the initiation, the Preceptor will confirm the placement attendance and provide a summative evaluation of the placement performance in an electronic SPA form.
  3. Five (5) Reflective Tasks (Professional Development Log): This requirement weighs 20% of the Course grade. These tasks include individual student's experiential learning in the context of National Competency Standards (3 tasks), Lifelong Learning (1 task) and Employability (1 task). Each reflection MUST NOT exceed 500 words. Student will record all Five (5) Reflective Tasks on their individual Placement experience using the SEAL model of reflection. The SEAL model Marking Criteria is closely aligned with the SEAL model. The Five (5) reflections will be marked together (cumulatively) as the Student demonstrates progression of their reflective skills throughout the Placement. See Blackboard for more details.

Note: The final decision regarding the overall Pass or Fail mark, as well as any additional/supplementary tasks, for this assessment component of the course will be made by the Course Coordinator (sometimes in discussion with the Preceptor).

B. Hospital Placement (HURDLE Assessment)

  1. Hospital Placement Completion: The Hospital Placement consists of EIGHT online modules of varying duration consisting of specific learning tasks that require submission of responses using links provided. Satisfactory completion of these modules is a requirement to PASS PHRM2012.

Criteria and marking: UQ Students - Please access the profile from Learn.UQ or mySI-net to access marking criteria held in this profile.

Task description

This assessment is a hurdle. To pass PHRM2012, students MUST PASS the overall Consultation Exam, i.e. 50% of the available marks.

  • The Consultation Exam will be held in the University examination period at the end of semester (EOS). This is a School-based exam and will be held at the Dutton Park campus.
  • The Consultation Exam is based on TWO separate prescription medication scenarios (7 minutes each) in which it is assumed that the two prescription drug requests are legally, therapeutically and professionally correct, with no requirement for the student to modify anything presented to them. The scenarios can be based on any medicine from any of the therapeutic classes covered in lectures or practicals in PHRM2012 until the time of the Examination. There will be no scheduled perusal, but students will be familiar with possible medications covered in this exam.
  • Students will lead a 7-minute simulated interaction role-playing the 'pharmacist' with the examiner role-playing the 'patient'. The student ('pharmacist') is required to initially elicit information from the examiner ('patient') in order to subsequently assist and discuss the prescription medication with the examiner ('patient') within the 7 minutes allocated, ensuring the quality use of medicine in the process. The focus of this Examination is on the student’s ability and professional capacity to communicate and interact with the simulated patient.
  • This Oral Exam will be recorded and the resulting recording retained as per university policy. The recording will be stored in a secure manner and will only be accessed if required for the purposes of moderation of marking; provision of feedback to the student; and/or re-marking following a successful re-mark application.
  • A resit may be offered to students who fail the EOS Consultation Exam. No extension or deferral is available on the scheduled date for the Resit Exam.
  • Supplementary Consultation Examination will be offered during the usual University Supplementary Exam period (mid-December 2024) to the eligible students (as per the University Policy) who did not pass the original Examination and/or the Resit Examination.

Marking:

  • To pass the Consultation Exam students need to achieve a mark greater than or equal to 50% as per the Marking Rubric when both marked cases are summed up. Students who receive < 50% of their overall mark will fail the exam.
  • The maximum mark that can be obtained from the Resit Consultation Examination is 50% (i.e. 10% out of 20%) for the Consultation Exam component of PHRM2012, as per the University Policy.
