Optimal use of medication for respiratory systems, infection, immunisation, oncology and palliative care, and aspects of practice, dispensing and counselling.

The course builds on skills and knowledge gained during the first and second years, and the first semester of the third year, of the BPharm(Hons) program and is vertically and horizontally integrated with other PHRM courses and BIOM3011.

Tutorials extend and reinforce concepts taught in lectures including ᅠelements of practice such as Over-The-Counter (OTC) medicines, complementary medicines, prescription counselling and dispensing.

A week-long placement in an urban or rural community pharmacy provides opportunities to develop professional and social skills as well as to apply and extend pharmaceutical knowledge in a community pharmacy setting.

Vaccination training provides students with the opportunity to acquire the skills (and after completing additional requirements) to administer vaccines under supervision during fourth year pharmacy placements.

Task description

Vaccination training is provided to prepare students to practice vaccination (under pharmacist supervision) during their 4th year pharmacy placements.

The training will commence in week 1, and consists of:

1) UQ Extend Vaccination Training (complete between weeks 1--6),

2) Online quiz (10% of PHRM3012 final grade) - must be passed to undertake the Face-To-Face Practical Assessment,

3) Face-to-Face Practical Assessment (5% of PHRM3012 final grade).

See Learn.UQ (Blackboard) for more details.

Additional Requirements for Vaccination Training Certification:

To meet requirements for certification of vaccination training requirements, submission of current evidence of First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Anaphylaxis Training to InPlace is required prior to the commencement of fourth year BPharm(Hons) placements, in addition to successful completion of PHRM3012 (which introduces you to clinically relevant vaccine knowledge) and PHRM3042 (which introduces you to vaccine types).

Information on the processes for submitting this information will be provided at a later date.

Completion of First Aid/CPR and Anaphylaxis Training is not a requirement to pass PHRM3012, and will need to be completed independently of PHRM3012.

Any training provider can be used for First Aid/CPR as long as they are accredited in Australia and equivalent to HLTAID001 'provide CPR' and HLTAID003 'provide first aid'.

Online anaphylaxis training is available from the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA).

Task description

The oral examination is an in person, school-based exam that is scheduled during the examination period. Student names and exam sessions will be posted on Learn.UQ prior to the exam revision period.

The marking rubrics (available through the PHRM3012 Learn.UQ site) for this assessment incorporate a significant focus on patient centred care. Students are highly recommended to download these rubrics and familiarise themselves with their contents.

Academic Integrity: academic integrity is taken seriously at the University of Queensland. Communication between students (collusion) relating to the oral exam, during each exam session, is not permitted. To maintain academic integrity, students will be required to: 1) show their UQ student identification card; and 2) hand over mobile phones/computers/devices with communication functions at the entry to the exam. Audio (and potentially video) of this exam will be recorded and may be reviewed at a later date where required.

The oral exam comprises of three stations:

Station ONE (10%; Patient consultation on a respiratory device; 5 min perusal + 10 min examination): In the first station you will be required to counsel a patient on a dispensed device. The counselling should be two-way, patient centred and address patient concerns about the medication or condition being treated (this will be given to you in perusal time). You may need to consider the patient's medicines, new and existing. In this station you will be required to demonstrate good communication technique and a clear understanding of indication, dose, relevant (common or uncommon but highly significant) adverse effects, and general therapeutic counselling points of the condition being treated. Permitted resources can be accessed for this station.

Station TWO (5%; Checking dispensed items and discussion with a dispensary technician; 5 min): In this station, you will be required to check TWO dispensed items, and to communicate with the dispensary technician about what the error/s is/are and how to fix it/them. This communication should take into account information on communication with other health professionals that has been previously introduced, and should positively support changes in future dispensing practice for the staff involved. Assume that all appropriate cautionary advisory labels (CALs) have been included.

Station THREE (5%; Clinical Application of Drug Knowledge; 5 min) In the third station you will be given an antimicrobial for treatment or prophylaxis of a condition, and you will be required to answer questions given by the examiner. The drug will be a category 1 drug from PHRM3012 personal medicines formulary, and will be a different drug to the drug allocated to you in station 1. Resources will not be allowed at this station and there will be no perusal. The examiner will guide the discussion.

Permitted Resources:

  • Up-to-date AMH, and APF will be made available for station 1 ONLY,
  • Students are not permitted to move the AMH or APF between stations,
  • No resources are permitted for station 2 or 3,
  • UQ student identification card (for identity verification)
