Students will undertake a supervised experiential placement in a pharmacy practice site that promotes opportunities to develop professional pharmacy practice knowledge, skills, and attributes, building on the previous three years of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours). The placement is scheduled for the first four weeks of semester 2.
PHRM4062 is a capstone course in the final year of the Pharmacy Program for students enrolled in the Major stream that offers an experiential Placement over 4 consecutive weeks in an Australian community pharmacy. Students will complete their Placement in Semester 2 of Year 4 of the Pharmacy Program. This course offers a unique opportunity for the Student to further expand their professional practice experience in preparation for graduation and beyond, the internship year and achievement of full professional competence. Students will complete 150 hours of supervised community pharmacy experiential Placement, reflect on their individual practice from personal and professional angles (e.g. relate it to specific elements of the National Competency Standards for Pharmacists in Australia 2016), and provide reflection and feedback on their overall learning across the 4 years of their degree and into the future, as they continue their professional development as lifelong learners.
Students will experience 'full-time hours' 5 days a week and are encouraged to consider their wellbeing during this time, ranging from developing basic awareness of safety matters (e.g. arranging safe travel to and from Placement site) to active self-care and looking after one's health and wellbeing during their Placement. Student wellbeing during Placement is not only important in relation to the UQ Placements Policy, but is also absolutely essential for effective learning, overall professionalisation, and a happy, balanced life.
Course requirements
Assumed background
It is assumed that the students have already experienced pharmacy practice through placements in previous years of their Pharmacy degree. This also further implies students' familiarity with the utmost importance of complying with the relevant policies, procedures, and practicalities while organising, managing and undertaking experiential placements.
Incompatible
You can't enrol in this course if you've already completed the following:
PHRM4010, PHRM4015, PHRM4030
Restrictions
Restricted to Bachelor of Pharmacy students

Course staff
Lecturer
Timetable
The timetable for this course is available on the UQ Public Timetable.
Additional timetable information
Each Student attends their Placement completing at least 150 hours over 4 weeks. The daily start and finish time depends on the arrangement determined in discussion between the Student andᅠtheir Preceptor. If the placement includes a public holiday relevant to that Placement site, the Students are expected to attendᅠthe Placement siteᅠin accordance with usual practice at that site, e.g. if the facility is not open during the public holiday then the students do not attend and that time is still included within their compulsory 150 hours (without the need to 'make up' any additionalᅠhours). This is because the students must be available to return to class on Monday of Week 5.
Aims and outcomes
The overall aim of the PHRM4062 Placement is for the final year Pharmacy Students to acquire a wholesome and informative experience of professional practice inᅠone or two Australian pharmacy practice settings ‘full-time’, for 4ᅠweeks. This ‘capstone’ Placements course is an opportunity for the Students to build holistically on their previous experiences, reflect on their personal and professional progress and employability, acknowledge with clarity their current strengths and weaknesses as practitioners-in-training at this point in time, and meaningfully considerᅠtheir personal and professional development as lifelong learners.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
LO1.
Link the knowledge and skills gained during the undergraduate Pharmacy Program with the practice of pharmacy experienced during Placement
LO2.
Develop the pharmaceutical, interpersonal, and social skills commonly utilised in the Australian community pharmacy setting
LO3.
Demonstrate insight into contemporary pharmacy practice through observation and active participation in workplace practices, e.g. identifying opportunities to contribute towards optimised patient care
LO4.
Relate and discuss your knowledge, skills, and professional attributes acquired throughout the Pharmacy degree in the context of your Placement experience
LO5.
Reflect on your Placement experience and relate it to your personal and professional development, including in the context of the National Competency Standards Framework for Pharmacists in Australia 2016
LO6.
Start your continuing professional development by reflecting on your past and present experiences and your future as a lifelong learner

Task description
PLACEMENT PARTICIPATION
PHRM4062 is a compulsory Placement course for Year 4 Major students. Each Student must attend and complete their Placement for 4 (four) consecutive weeks and at least 150 hours in their Placement pharmacy during Weeks 1 to 4 of Semester 2. Any alterations to the set timeframe must be discussed with the Course Coordinator and approved prior to the Placement.
All Students are expected to be available to commence classes in other Year Four Courses in Week 5, as per their individual timetable.
The start and finish time each day will depend on the agreement between the Student and their Preceptor. If the Placement includes a public holiday relevant to that Placement site, the Students are expected to attend/not attend the placement site in accordance with usual practice at that site e.g. if the facility is not open during the public holiday then the Students do not attend and that time is included within the 150 hours.
It is expected that students will attend their experiential placement sites on a full-time basis from Monday to Friday over the 4 consecutive weeks of the placement period. In the case of illness, students are NOT expected to attend their placement and should inform their Preceptor and The School Office (pharm.studentadmin@uq.edu.au) as soon as possible. Students away from their placement site for greater than TWO days due (i.e. on the third day) to illness should obtain a medical certificate and provide this to the School Office and their Preceptor.
Students are advised to contact the Course Coordinator to notify of any prolonged absence (greater than THREE days) from the placement site due to illness. Additionally, irrespective of medical certificates, any cumulative absence over the 4 week period longer than 3 days must be immediately brought to the attention of the Course Co-ordinator.
PRECEPTOR'S CONFIRMATION OF PLACEMENT ATTENDANCE AND EVALUATION OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE
The Preceptor's confirmation that the Student has attended their placement and their evaluation of their performance during the Placement are each compulsory components of this course.
- Throughout the Placement, Students are expected to seek guidance and constructive feedback from their Preceptor. This is how they will know how they are progressing and/or if they need to approach anything differently.
- Students are encouraged to meet with their preceptor (about mid-way through the placement) to discuss their progress, using the SPA form to guide the discussion. Students can use the SPA Form as many times as they like during the Placement, to initiate, guide and inform discussions with the Preceptor, at a mutually suitable time. These SPA forms would be 'formative' submissions to allow feedback and would not be the final evaluation of the student.
- Towards the end of the placement period (e.g. from Wednesday of the last week) the student should upload at least ONE scanned copy of their formative SPA form to the link on Blackboard (under the Assessment tab) entitled "Formative SPA Form Submission Link"
- The student will be prompted to submit to their preceptor via the ePortfolio
- This process will then trigger an email to the Preceptor that will allow them to complete the final 'summative' student evaluation via an electronic SPA form and allow them to confirm student attendance for 4 consecutive weeks full time
- This email that the Preceptors will receive will have in the subject line: "Work Assessment from UQ ePortfolio - Surname (of student), Firstname (of student)".
- *please note - the 'Surname' and 'First name' will appear as they are in Blackboard, i.e. there will be no preferred names, nicknames, etc.
- The Preceptor will indicate their confirmation of your placement attendance as well as their evaluation of your Placement performance as either Needs Attention, Developing, or Satisfactory across several criteria outlined on the SPA Form.
- The Course Coordinator will review these evaluations and take necessary action where/if needed.
- The final decision regarding the overall Pass or Fail mark for this assessment component of the course will be made by the Course Coordinator, in discussion with the Preceptor.
Students are able to confirm submissions and review pending or marked submissions by using the 'My Results' section inside the UQ ePortfolio, or by viewing if the item is indicated to have been submitted in the top right hand side corner of the submission page. Students will be able to view the mark in 'My results' once the mark has been released. The result will appear as 'pending' prior to the mark release. Once marked, the mark will appear as N/A since it has no numerical value.
Hurdle requirements
Preceptor must confirm student attendance and complete student evaluation via ePortfolio. The Student is responsible for uploading their formative SPA to the correct Preceptor to trigger the email link to be sent to the Preceptor to complete the evaluation.Submission guidelines
The electronic, final assessment, SPA Form generated and emailed to the preceptor by ePortfolio (after student initiates the process on Wednesday of their last placement week) is exactly the same as this printable SPA Form, which can be used to facilitate ongoing feedback on the student's progress during their placement. In addition to this table, the final assessment SPA Form will also ask the Preceptor to confirm the student's attendance.

Task description
Students will submit a total of FIVE reflections for the course, using the S (Situation), E (Effect), A (Action) and L (Learning) reflection method according to the schemas and submission dates as outlined in the ECP. Please click on each individual link to submit each reflection on Blackboard through the ePortfolio. The reflection can be submitted in a WORD document in paragraph form using the headings of the SEAL reflection template (i.e. Situation, Effect, Action and Learning).
Given these reflections are the only assessment involved in this course, students are expected to provide a high standard of reflection for each submission. The key component of reflection is ensuring the creation of a specific plan to aid learning within the scope of the situation, and students should describe how this action is being undertaken.
Each reflection should not exceed 800 words and contributes 20% towards the overall course grade.
THREE of the reflections will be related to the National Competency Standards 2016 schema (due Week 6).
- Reflection 1 (NCS Schema)
- Reflection 2 (NCS Schema)
- Reflection 3 (NCS Schema)
Students should consider their individual experiences during their Placement in order to reflect effectively within each of the different schemas provided.
National Competency Standards (NCS) schema: Please read the relevant National Competency Standards (NCS) Framework for Pharmacists in Australia 2016 (as available through the course Blackboard site) and familiarise yourself with the Standards before attending your Placement. Students are to reflect on ONE chosen Enabling Competency from the NCS in each reflection. Each selected Enabling Competency should be different from the others. Students should reflect on the level of skills, knowledge or professional attributes they acquired/demonstrated during their Placement experience and relate this clearly to the chosen Enabling Competency. Students are also encouraged to reflect on their own unique personal experiences (e.g. feelings, personal attributes, individual strengths/weaknesses at this stage of development, etc).
If the files are not uploaded correctly, the files will not be marked.

TWO of the reflections will be related to the Lifelong Learning (LLL) and Employability Schemas (due Week 12).
- Reflection 4 (Lifelong Learning schema)
- Reflection 5 (Employability schema)
Students should consider their individual experiences during their Placement in order to reflect effectively within each of the different schemas provided.
Lifelong Learning (LLL) schema: Students should reflect on their own future learning needs, which will enable them to professionally manage their internship and joining the Pharmacy profession. They should focus on how their Placement uncovered specific elements of their own practice and learning that they consider to be particularly relevant to their future practice, and for becoming a lifelong learner who will remain committed to their continuing professional development.
Employability schema: Employability can be defined as a “set of capabilities and personal attributes that empower graduates to perform effectively in the workplace, generate opportunities, and create positive social and economic impact”. This Employability Reflection is an opportunity for Students to reflect on their own personal experiences in relation to any aspects of their individual employability at this late stage of their student career path. It is strongly recommended that students familiarise themselves with, before the placement, the UQ’s Employability Framework for necessary background information on the meaning, definitions, structure, and relevant considerations in preparation for addressing this assessment item: https://employability.uq.edu.au/about/employability-framework.
