This course offers students insight into management issues around pharmacy, pharmaceutical and health care, preparing them for leadership roles in their chosen field of clinical practice. Students will gain insight into leadership, management and organisational dynamics, quality assurance in health systems, human resource management basics, offering them skills and knowledge for advancing their career in the future.
The course is delivered as three online modules.
- An introductory online tutorial will be held in Week 1 of semester - Thursday, 6-7 PM (AEST i.e. Brisbane time).
- One online workshop will be held for each module on a Thursday, 6-8 PM (AEST i.e. Brisbane time).

Assumed background
A student coming into this course will have a Bachelor of Pharmacy or equivalent. A student will be expected to have a general knowledge of skills required to practice pharmacy in either community and/or hospital settings. A student will have practiced as a pharmacist.

Aims and outcomes
This course will further develop students’ understanding and application of strategic planning and management, and leadership principles and theories to drive change and initiatives in their practice, including supporting organisational change, and effective teams. At the end of the course, students will be able to undertake comprehensive business and service planning for a pharmacy service (or initiatives) within their practice environment.

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Design and evaluate pharmacy services that address value-based care and organisational objectives.
LO2.
Apply strategic planning principles to the development, resourcing, and implementation of pharmacy services within the healthcare system.
LO3.
Develop and communicate a strategic business plan that aligns with healthcare priorities, demonstrates financial viability, and incorporates effective marketing strategies to engage stakeholders and support implementation.
LO4.
Apply leadership and team management strategies to foster collaboration, and enhance workforce performance through recruitment, staff induction, and performance appraisal processes.
LO5.
Analyse and address organisational challenges to change management to ensure the sustainability and impact of pharmacy services.

- Outline the resourcing, activities, and outputs required to implement a new business initiative or pharmacy service for your professional practice setting, and the resulting desired outcomes and impact using a Logic Model (max. 2 x A4 pages, using at least 8-point font size).

Whilst students may use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Translation (MT) technologies, successful completion of the assessment will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which AI will provide only limited support and guidance. A failure to reference AI or MT use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct. To pass this assessment, students may be required to demonstrate detailed comprehension of their written submission independent of AI and MT tools.
