Further development of the technical, clinical, personal and professional skills acquired as a pharmacy graduate that form the basis of future practice. The unit explores the day-to-day practice of pharmacy including systematic problem solving, therapeutics, evidence based practice, patient monitoring and outcomes, symptomology, improving adherence, multiple medication management, pharmaceutical care, standards and competencies for pharmacy practice, ethics, legal aspects, multidisciplinary approaches to health care, primary care, over the counter medicines, communication and counselling, public health, pharmaceutical calculations, risk management and dealing with difficult clients. A two-day face-to-face seminar and a one-day online seminar require attendance during semester.

The Pharmacy Intern Training Program (ITP) is a Pharmacy Board of Australia approved internship program. Satisfactory completion of an approved pharmacy intern training program is one of several prerequisites for general registration as a pharmacist in Australia.

PHRM7081 forms half of the ITP. It is necessary for interns to also satisfactorily complete PHRM7082.

The key components of the program include:

  • Seminars (lectures and small group workshops).
  • Online learning modules including self-directed learning quizzes.
  • Learning portfolio – comprised of activities covering various topics including medication safety, counselling, conflict management, adverse medicine event reporting, extemporaneous product preparation and medicines information enquiry.
  • Case-based discussions undertaken in the workplace.
  • Personal reflections.
  • Learning Plan development.
  • Preceptor feedback and Intern Competencies Assessments.
  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities including undertaking a health promotion, presenting a continuing education activity in the workplace, completing a medicines utilisation evaluation (MUE) and reflecting on individual cultural competency.
  • Evidence of 40 CPD points obtained during the Intern year.
  • Completion of training plan and development of future learning plan.
  • Evidence of completion of a Senior First Aid Certificate/CPR.
