Further development of the technical, clinical, personal and professional skills acquired as a pharmacy graduate that form the basis of future practice. The unit explores the day-to-day practice of pharmacy including systematic problem solving, therapeutics, evidence based practice, patient monitoring and outcomes, symptomology, improving adherence, multiple medication management, pharmaceutical care, standards and competencies for pharmacy practice, ethics, legal aspects, multidisciplinary approaches to health care, primary care, over the counter medicines, communication and counselling, public health, pharmaceutical calculations, risk management and dealing with difficult clients. There are on-campus workshops which require attendance at the School of Pharmacy during the year.

The course PHRM7101 is also known as the UQ Pharmacy Intern Training Program (ITP) and is a Pharmacy Board of Australia approved internship program. Satisfactory completion of an approved pharmacy intern training program is one of several prerequisites for general registration as a pharmacist in Australia.

The key components of the program include:

  • Small group pharmacist-moderated online discussion forums.
  • Seminars (lectures and small group workshops).
  • Online learning modules including self-directed learning quizzes.
  • Learning portfolio – comprised of activities covering various topics including medication safety, counselling, conflict management, adverse medicine event reporting, extemporaneous product preparation and medicines information enquiry.
  • Case-based discussions undertaken in the workplace.
  • Personal reflections.
  • Learning Plan development.
  • Preceptor feedback and Intern Competencies Assessments.
  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities including undertaking a health promotion, presenting a continuing education activity in the workplace, completing a medicines utilisation evaluation (MUE) and completing training and reflection on the the provision of culturally responsive patient care.
  • Evidence of 40 CPD points obtained during the Intern year.
  • Completion of training plan and development of future learning plan.
  • Evidence of completion of a Senior First Aid Certificate/CPR.

Assumed background

The student must be provisionally registered as a pharmacist with the Pharmacy Board of Australia.

A student coming into this course will have a Bachelor of Pharmacy or equivalent.

Restrictions

Only available to students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate of Pharmacy Practice.

Task description

Seminar block 1 is held in-person face-to-face across 3 days at UQ Dutton Park Campus. There is no capacity for online involvement.

Seminar block 2 is held online on one day. Access to a tablet or personal computer with a camera is required.

Seminar block 3 is held in-person face-to-face across 3 days at UQ Dutton Park Campus. There is no capacity for online involvement.

An additional two days in the same week as seminar block 3 provide an opportunity to complete activities that are required for registration as a pharmacist but individuals may not have an opportunity to experience in their workplace. These include completing the requirements to achieve the compounding competencies, and complete a first aid and CPR certificate.

Participation in the small group activities and workshops is expected and will be observed and monitored by the course coordinator and tutors. Participation must be sufficient to demonstrate competency for the workshop topics.

Hours attending the seminar can be claimed towards your supervised practice hours and documentation will provided. 

This assessment task is to be completed in-person.

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Hurdle requirements

Attend and participate to a satisfactory/competent level in the small group activities and workshops, including the simulated patient interaction.

Submission guidelines

Submission: Complete all activities during the scheduled seminar blocks.

Resubmission: Failure to participate to a satisfactory level will result in an additional assignment to ensure you reach the competencies required for general registration as a pharmacist.

Deferral or extension

You cannot defer or apply for an extension for this assessment.

If you cannot attend the seminar you must notify the Intern Program Coordinator prior to or on the day of the seminar and provide satisfactory documentation to support your absence (e.g. medical certificate) within 48 hours. You will be required to undertake additional activities to cover the topics missed in the seminars. These additional activities must be to a satisfactory standard and demonstrate competency.

Task description

Throughout the year you will develop your e-portfolio by completing Learning Portfolio Exercises (LPE 1-6), Continual Professional Development (CPD) Activities (CAs 1-4) and Case-based Discussions (CbD 1-4). These are completed in the workplace in conjunction with and under supervision from your preceptor. These activities must be completed as part of your requirements for the Intern Training Program. Several of these activities are compulsory Pharmacy Board of Australia intern requirements (e.g. LPE 6). 

This assessment task evaluates student’s abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Hurdle requirements

All exercises and activities must be submitted and must reach the required standard to achieve a pass.

Submission: Documentary evidence of these exercises will be uploaded to ePortfolio via the portal in Learn.UQ course site using the ITP templates provided.

Task description

The purpose of the small group online team discussion series is to generate discussion and debate among interns about professional pharmacy practice issues. The small team discussions consist of practice related topics. There are five small-team discussions occurring as 11-day blocks starting in February and finishing in July. There will be approximately a four week break between each team discussion.

  • For the dates of the online discussions please consult the timetable on Learn.UQ.
  • Interns are expected to work within their team to produce a team response to the posed questions. The quality of the group response will be assessed (see rubric for marking criteria).
  • Refer to the 'Intern Guide to Team Discussions' available on Learn.UQ for additional information.
  • Group response: The group response is due by 1pm on the day immediately following the close of the discussion. It is the team leader's responsibility to ensure submission. Late submissions will not be accepted except under exceptional circumstances considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Feedback will be provided for on-time submissions.
  • Peer feedback: peer feedback is required and is due by 5pm three days following the close of the discussion.
  • Team leader reflection: Team leader for the discussion must submit a reflection on their experience by 5pm five days following the close of the discussion. Team leader reflection only needs to be completed once.

Hurdle requirements

Resubmission: Interns who do not achieve 'satisfactory' will be provided with an additional written assignment in order to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the material.

Deferral or extension

You cannot defer or apply for an extension for this assessment.

Interns who are unable to participate in a team discussion must notify the Intern Program Coordinator and provide satisfactory explanation or documentation. You will be given an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the material by undertaking a written assignment.

Task description

Self-directed learning modules and quizzes (SDLQs): A series of self-directed modules must be completed during the year, and associated quizzes passed (achieve a mark of 65% or more). The quizzes consist of clinical questions and patient profile questions specific to the topic.

APC-style extended quiz: The 2-hr online MCQ quiz will consist of clinical questions, calculations, and forensic (law/privacy/ethics) questions.

  • The duration and composition of the quiz and the question types used are based on the format and type used in the Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) written examination that you must successfully pass in order to gain general registration as a pharmacist.
  • This is an open book quiz, conducted offsite on your own device at any time during a 7 day period.

This assessment task evaluates student’s abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Hurdle requirements

SDLQs: A mark of 65% or higher in each of the 14 quizzes is required to pass the assessment. Additional attempts are permitted in order to reach the pass mark. APC-style extended quiz: A mark of 65% or higher is required to pass the assessment. Only one attempt is permitted for the APC-style quiz. If unsuccessful, evidence of passing the Pharmacy Board national registration written examination is required to pass the course.

Submission guidelines

Submission: The APC-style extended quiz will be conducted online using Inspera. The module quizzes are accessed and submitted via a link in Learn.UQ.
