Development of professional competencies in the areas of assessment & clinical management of patients with cardiorespiratory conditions

This course aims to develop students' knowledge and skills in the area of cardiothoracic physiotherapy,ᅠenabling attainment of entry-level competenciesᅠin preparation for clinical practice.ᅠFocus will beᅠon the physiotherapy assessment and management of people with acute and chronic cardiorespiratory conditions across the lifespan and in a range of settings, including those who present pre- and post-operatively (abdominal, thoracic, cardiac and vascular surgical procedures) and those in the intensive care setting. Management includes: airway clearance, strategies to improve lung volume and ventilation, mobilisation, critical care (e.g., suction, manual hyperinflation).ᅠ

Course delivery includes a variety of learning modes: lectures,ᅠskills-teaching 'how to' lectures (with video footage of practical techniques), practicals, Case-Based Learning (CBL) discussion sessions, Standardised Patients (SP) role-playing sessions (simulations), workbook activities, Independent Learning Packagesᅠ(ILP) and online Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) packages.ᅠThese approaches are designed to facilitate students'ᅠunderstanding of theory and rationale, and support competent performance of physiotherapy assessment (patient interview, physical examination) and management (includingᅠfacilitation of ventilation and airway clearance).

Thisᅠcourseᅠaims to facilitate students to develop a problem-solving approach to formulate appropriate, evidence-basedᅠassessment and management plans for individuals across the lifespan. The role of the physiotherapist in the multiprofessional teamᅠis explored through case studies and simulations. In addition, students may have the opportunity to practice delegation of tasks to assistants.

Assumed background

Students entering this course will have completed all PHTY-coded courses across the prior 5 semesters in the undergraduate physiotherapy program. Specifically, the following provide necessary background information on which to build knowledge in PHTY3250:

Anatomy: Respiratory, thoracic, cardiac, vascular;

BIOL1007: Infection control;

PHTY1221: Cardiovascular system, exercise testing and prescription;

PHYL2062: Respiratory and cardiac components: Respiratory Function Testing (procedures, analysis), ABG analysis, ECG analysis;

PHTY2101: Orthopaedics and pathology components.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

LO1.

Implement a range of effective communication skills including: verbal, nonverbal, and written formats; to clearly and coherently present knowledge to a variety of individuals and teams by adjusting communication to accommodate the specific situation and across the lifespan. 

LO2.

Demonstrate an ability to appropriately plan and implement an assessment of a person within acute and chronic cardiorespiratory contexts, safely, systematically, and efficiently.

LO3.

Apply appropriate clinical reasoning and describe the theory and rationales of interventions for cardiothoracic physiotherapy, applicable across the lifespan and within acute and chronic cardiorespiratory contexts.

LO4.

Develop and perform effective, safe and evidence-based physiotherapy interventions that are holistic and prioritized in order to address assessment findings and the individual's treatment goals, including delegation and referral where appropriate.

LO5.

Evaluate the effectiveness of cardiorespiratory management by using appropriate re-evaluation and/or valid and reliable outcome measures, along with appropriate record keeping.

In semester theory examination covering the theory components of Weeks 1-6 (including ILP, CALs, CBL sessions, SP sessions). The specifics related to the SP session/s will not be included in this exam, however the overall principles covered in these learning activities should underpin your knowledge and approach to responding to questions (e.g., how you prepare to assess a patient, perform assessment, clinical reasoning, prepare for management, reassess outcome measures, plan for follow-up, communicate with members of the team, etc).

Feedback: Overall, summary of feedback will be provided, including cohort feedback on areas for further development. This will be released after deferred examinations are complete. Requests for further feedback must be submitted in writing to the course coordinator, and must include a reflection on exam performance and specific questions for feedback.

Late submission

Exams submitted after the end of the submission time will incur a late penalty.

Penalties will be applied for late submissions of online examinations as follows:

Less than 5 minutes: 5%

From 5 minutes to less than 15 minutes: 20%

More than 15 minutes: 100%

Penalties will be applied unless there is sufficient evidence (e.g. time-stamped screenshots or photos, or emails from AskUs) that submission commenced at the conclusion of the examination time and the late submission was beyond the control of the student. Requests for removal of the late penalty for an online exam is made using the extension of assessment due date request.

This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 7 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Requests for extension of assessment due date must be made online, via your my.UQ portal prior to the submission date and time. Late applications may not be accepted. The request must also contain documentation satisfactorily supporting the request. If an extension is approved, you will be notified via your my.UQ portal and the new date for submission provided by your course coordinator.

This is a MUST PASS component of the course (≥55%)

This examination will be scheduled on-campus in a face-to-face format, during the central examination period. 

Feedback: Overall, summary of feedback will be provided via Blackboard, including cohort feedback on areas for further development. This will be released after deferred examinations are complete. Requests for further feedback must be submitted in writing to the course coordinator, and must include a reflection on exam performance and specific questions for feedback. Additional feedback will be provided within 14 calendar days. End-semester exam marks will not be released until after the release of the final grade.

In this course the recording of an assessment (oral/practical) performance has been waived, a record of student performance will be taken by other means such as detailed written notes that can be referred to if a remark is required at a later date.

Additional course grading information

Final marks falling between whole percentages will be rounded to the nearest whole percentage. Tie-breaking will be conducted using the round half up method whereby half-way values are always rounded up, meaning, for example, that 89.5% and above will be rounded to 90% and 89.49% and below will be rounded down to 89%.

NOTE: 65% of the assessment for this course is timed at the end of semester (Viva = 25%, Practical = 40%).

NOTE: This course contains ‘MUST PASS’ assessment items, as follows: End of Semester Viva, and End Semester Practical. You must pass these items to pass this course overall, i.e. even if your final percentage mark is 55% or higher the individual ‘MUST PASS’ assessment items must have been passed.

There is a "safety fail" element in the End Semester Practical assessment. A mark of "fail" in the safety criterion for a component will result in a fail for that component of the exam.

Where an assessment item requires the student to "List 'x' number" of responses (for example,ᅠ"List 4ᅠcontraindications" to a specified technique)ᅠonly the first 'x' responses listed by the student will be assessed. Any further responses listed will not be assessed.

Practical and Viva examinations will be scheduled on-campus in a face-to-face format, during the central examination period. As this is dependent on Australian Government guidelines for COVID-19 at the time, this is subject to change.
