Students will develop an ability to integrate the knowledge, physical skills, principles of evidence-based practice and clinical reasoning, ethical and professional behaviours that are necessary to function competently as a physiotherapist. Students will undergo professional practice experiences using real-world and standardised patients and a range of learning tasks; such as: evidence based practice and clinical reasoning in complex cases and chronic disease management, defining the role of physiotherapists and other health care practitioners in the multiprofessional health-care team, as well as other physiotherapy practice-related activities. Professional skills and reflective practice will be facilitated in order to prepare the student for challenges in health care service and delivery. Emphasis will be placed on developing student's knowledge and skills to function autonomously as primary contact health care practitioners in a range of contexts (e.g. hospital, community, ambulatory, and primary health care settings).
This course seeks to integrate foundation theoretical concepts and principles of biomedical, cognitive and behavioural sciences relevant to physiotherapy practice, with physical, communicative, cognitive and technical skills. Students are expected to apply knowledge and skills to achieve responsible, professional, evidence based practice, which demonstrates entry-level physiotherapy competencies and UQ graduate attributes with standardised patients (SPs).
In this course students rotate through three streams of core physiotherapy practiceᅠ- cardiorespiratory (CR), musculoskeletal (MS) and neuro-geriatric (NG) in an intensive 3 week program.
Each area is a pass/fail competency assessment. Students will be reviewed daily as to meeting the learning objectives, provided with formative feedback in real time for their ongoing clinical skills development.ᅠ
In this course, for each stream,ᅠstudents further develop physiotherapy competencies in a wide range of services and contexts/settings, with students managing diverse SP clients across the lifespan. In addition, students may have the opportunity to manage assistants/other staff via delegation and negotiation of tasks. Students will be responsible and accountable for their own learning, while working collaboratively with peers, clinical educators, SPs and other staff within the three key areas.ᅠStudents must use self-reflection to both maintain and extend their professional competencies.ᅠ
Course requirements
Assumed background
Students are assumed to have a knowledge base derived from courses in 1st-3rd years of the Physiotherapy program including biomedical and behavioural sciences, pathology and specialist physiotherapy areas. It is assumed that students will be competent in areas of assessment, clinical reasoning and management across the range of conditions in core areas and across the lifespan. They should also have developed core communication and handling skills. These skills will have been integrated in clinical activities across the program to date.ᅠAdherence to SHRS requirements for clinical practice is a pre-requisite for each clinical course including PHTY4401.ᅠ

(1) Develop in students the physiotherapy competencies that reflect entry level standards in the physiotherapy profession.
(2) Integrate foundational biomedical and behavioural sciences, attitudes, behaviours and technical learning in the management of a range of clinical problems.
(3) Emphasise the involvement of the physiotherapist in the development of effective, comprehensive management plans for the delivery of competent services to clients in a variety of settings, within a framework of holistic care and optimisation of health.
(4) Encourage the use of inter-professional learning and multi-professional practice.
(5) Develop student familiarisation with workplace health and safety, emergency procedures and equity policies in that specific workplace during induction.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
LO1.
Demonstrate ethical and professional decision-making and behaviour appropriate to physiotherapy while applying knowledge and understanding of standards of physiotherapy practice, relevant codes of conduct, and client rights.
LO2.
Demonstrate a competent level of effective verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills applied to all aspects of practice including interactions with clients, professionals and the community.
LO3.
Demonstrate a competent understanding of the presentation and management of a wide range of clinical problems across the lifespan while being respectful and sensitive to individual client needs.
LO4.
Demonstrate a competent ability to appropriately, safely, accurately, systematically and efficiently assess / re-assess a client to determine and prioritise problems via gathering, integrating and interpreting appropriate data related to the patient.
LO5.
Demonstrate an appropriate process of clinical reasoning in making decisions related to the client such as developing a hypothesis, determining patient outcomes and developing treatment options for holistic patient-centered care.
LO6.
Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of goal-setting with clients and self-management for return of function, work and leisure activities.
LO7.
Demonstrate a competent standard of ability to interpret, analyse and integrate the assessment, re-assessment and patient response findings in the development and refining of a hypothesis.
LO8.
Select, develop and implement safe, appropriate and effective physiotherapy and other intervention plans to a competent standard using problem solving skills such as critical thinking and judgement while aiming to achieve client centered treatment goals.

Course grading
Full criteria for each grade is available in the Assessment Procedure.
Pass/Fails | Cut off Percent | Description |
---|---|---|
P | - |
Course grade description: In order to pass the course, the studentᅠmust achieve a score of 'Functional' for items 1,2,3,4,5,6 and 20 and achieve an overall 90% of gradable behavioursᅠat a Functional and above level to pass each stream. All 3 clinical streams must be passed to pass the course.ᅠ |
F | - |
Course grade description: The student will fail the course if less than 90% of the gradable behaviours are rated at a 'Functional' level and items 1,2,3,4,5,6 and 20 are rated at less than Functional.ᅠ Any of the assessment items are graded as a fail unless the assessment item failed falls under the resubmission policy detailed below and is passed on resubmission. The following grading scheme applies to thisᅠPass / Fail course: Grade of PASS will be awarded, if the student passesᅠall 3 streams Grade of 3 will be awarded, and a supplementary offered, if the studentᅠfailsᅠ1 of 3 streams Grade of 2ᅠwill be awarded, and NO supplementary offered,ᅠif the student failsᅠ2 of 3 streams Grade of 1 will be awarded, and NO supplementary offered, if the studentᅠfailsᅠ3 of 3 streams |
Additional course grading information
Final marks falling between whole percentages will be rounded to the nearest whole percentage. Tie-breaking will be conducted using the round half up method whereby half-way values are always rounded up, meaning, for example, that 89.5% and above will be rounded to 90% and 89.49% and below will be rounded down to 89%.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This course contains ‘must pass’ assessment items.ᅠYou must pass ALL 3 OSCE's to pass this course overall, i.e. even if your final percentage mark is 55% or higher the individual ‘must pass’ assessment items must have been passed.
Safety fail within an OSCE can be awarded and will mean a fail overall for that OSCE.
Supplementary assessment
Supplementary assessment is available for this course.

Resubmission/Resit of assessment items
The School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences supports the concept of resubmission or resitting of failed assessment items in specific and defined circumstances.
In this course, the written workbooks and/or written tasksᅠareᅠeligible for consideration forᅠthe resubmissionᅠoptionᅠif the assessment item was submittedᅠon time. Students who are granted a resubmissionᅠfor an assessment item and do not submit byᅠthe scheduled date will not be granted an extension.ᅠ
Students are eligible for only one resit option perᅠstream.
Note: a resit is not available for the simulation activities as assessment is continuous and based on performance over the course of theᅠstream week.
Submitting assessment in Blackboard and Turnitin
When assessment is submitted throughᅠBlackboardᅠyou will receive a confirmation page as a digital receipt.ᅠThis information will also be sent to your student e-mail account.ᅠPlease ensure you keep this email.
