In this course, students will integrate knowledge gained in previous years with ethical and professional behaviours and clinical reasoning to facilitate the transition into clinical practice. Coursework will focus on professional issues related to physiotherapy, communication with third party payers and be introduced to the systems that underpin health businesses. The learning activities will position the student to be a valued member of any organization to enhance employability.

This is a capstone course designed to integrate what has been learned in the previous years of undergraduate studies in physiotherapy to facilitate the transition to professional practice in healthcare. This course aims to demonstrate how successful integration of clinical skills with organisational knowledge will add value to you personally as well as professionally, and enhance your employability.

Physiotherapy is a ‘people profession’ which operates in various settings – home, work, private clinics and hospitals. Understanding the systems that support practitioners to provide high quality care consistently, cost-effectively and efficiently requires more than good clinical skills. Good business practices drive better clinical outcomes irrespective of the setting. Your career may include being an employee, an employer, or ᅠa practice manager / department manager. These roles require understanding of the contexts, policies, systems, evaluation and communication. As one public hospital Director of Physiotherapy said, “the public sector is all about business now with business cases required for all levels of funding. Those who understand the importance of business will progress in any organisation faster.” Through the lectures, eLearning packages and assessments in this course ᅠyou will be better positioned to be a valuable member of any organisation or business.

To support students who are on clinical placement, we have organised a series of online lectures and eLearning resources delivered by experienced health practitioners / managers. Theᅠopportunity to learn about theᅠ career decisions that leading physiotherapists made to be where they are today; how to communicate with external bodies and the requirements to manage clients funded by these bodies will be facilitated in an online environment.ᅠ
