The course will provide students with the knowledge, skills and behaviours to promote optimal participation in work, leisure and sport in preparation for professional practice.

The learning activities are arranged in three modules:
- Module 1: Manual handlingᅠᅠ
- Module 2: Prevention and rehabilitation in work and sport
- Module 3: Introduction to clinical practice
In Module 1 students will be introduced to the people handling activities and learn how to safely lift and instruct others in safe lifting practices. In Module 2 students will learn about task analysis, injury prevention and management in the workplace, the various tools available for use in industry and how to undertake an ergonomic workstation assessment and functional capacity evaluation. They will also cover injury prevention and return to sport and participation. Module 3 will introduce students toᅠclinical practice and transition to profession life in preparation forᅠclinical placements. Students will undertake an observational clinical experience and complete a reflective journal. They will identify one aspect of their clinical experience toᅠpresent to their fellow students as an 'in-service' activity.ᅠ

Aims and outcomes
The aims of the course are to enable the student to develop knowledge, skills and behaviours required of the physiotherapist to promote optimum participation in work, leisure and sport, in preparation for professional practice.

Demonstrate knowledge and skills in applying ergonomic tools for the assessment and management of musculoskeletal injuries in the workplace

Understand how to plan and execute an ergonomic risk assessment and communicate the findings, including the risk for musculoskeletal injury and recommended action plan for industry

Task description
This assessment task will be completed during the practical class session. Students will be required to complete a number of tasks to determine safety and competence in the area of manual handling. This is a must pass task (hurdle) with the student being given more opportunity on the same day to demonstrate competence if they fail.

Task description
During the course of their observational experience students will complete a self-reflective journal. They will identify one case or aspect of physiotherapy management which provides a learning opportunity. Students will research this topic and prepare a short in-service presentation to deliver to their peers.
This project is assessed by a 5 x 5 slide oral presentation.

Late submission
A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.
Late submission of assessment items will attract a penalty of 10% of the mark per day late or, for work graded on a 1-7 scale, a deduction of one grade per day
(including weekends and public holidays), unless a formal extension has been organised prior to the due date and time.
Requests for extension of assessment due date must be made online, via your my.UQ portal prior to the submission date and time.

Additional course grading information
Final marks falling between whole percentages will be rounded to the nearest whole percentage. Tie-breaking will be conducted using the round half up method whereby half-way values are always rounded up, meaning, for example, that 89.5% and above will be rounded to 90% and 89.49% and below will be rounded down to 89%.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This course contains ‘must pass’ assessment items, as follows: Manual Handling Competency Based Practical Assessmentᅠand End-semester Theory Exam.ᅠYou must pass these items to pass this course overall, i.e. even if your final percentage mark is 55% or higher the individual ‘must pass’ assessment items must have been passed.

Resubmission/Resit of Assessment Items
The School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences supports the concept of resubmission or resitting of failed assessment items in specific and defined circumstances. In this course, the Manual Handling Competency Based Practical Assessmentᅠis eligible for consideration of the resit option if the assessment item was completed on time.
After resit, the maximum result is a pass mark for that assessment component. Students who are granted a resit for an assessment item and do not attend on the scheduled date will not be permitted to reschedule the assessment.
Deferred exams
Students may be eligible for a deferred exam if there are exceptional or unavoidable circumstances, or as a one-off discretionary request. Deferred exam requests should be submitted as soon as possible, and no later than five calendar days after the date of the original exam.
