This course will provide students with fundamental knowledge relating to physiotherapy examination and treatment techniques. Students will acquire skills relevant to patient assessment and will understand the role of patient examination in their overall management.

Students will be provided with the opportunity to learn about the principles of therapeutic exercise as it concerns the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and sensori-motor systems.ᅠ

Aims and outcomes
- To introduce students to the kinesiological basis of physiotherapy diagnosis and treatment
- To equip students with the skills to perform basic physiotherapy assessment and treatment procedures
- To introduce students to the concept of measuring treatment outcomes to provide evidence of treatment effectiveness
- To introduce students to therapeutic exercise as a treatment modality and the role of exercise in healthcare and well-being
- To appreciate the range of exercises, and characteristics of exercises for different systems
- To understand to a basic level, biological adaptations to exercise, across the lifespan

Task description
This practical examination will cover all material taught relating to fundamentals of physiotherapy assessment for the lower limb, upper limb, neck and trunk.
Students will be required to perform a series of physical examination techniques (including corresponding measurements where relevant). The emphasis of this examination is on the effective and safe performance of these procedures, although examiners will also question students about the theoretical underpinnings of these techniques.
This exam is worth 30% of the overall course grade and is a must-pass component. The overall pass mark for this assessment task is 55%.
This assessment task is to be completed in-person. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Task description
During this practical examination students will be required to assess and prescribe therapeutic exercises, and demonstrate PNF techniques. All practical skills and theoretical knowledge from the course pertaining to therapeutic exercise and PNF will be examinable.

Task description
This end of semester theory examination will include all of the content covered in PHTY7803. It will be closed book, held in-person, on-campus during the end of semester examination period. It may contain multiple choice, short answer, problem solving, and essay-style questions. The exam will run for a total of 130 minutes, including 10 minutes planning/reading time.
This exam is a must-pass component of the course and is worth 40% of the overall course grade. The pass mark for this exam is 55%.

Additional course grading information
Final marks falling between whole percentages will be rounded to the nearest whole percentage. Tie-breaking will be conducted using the round half up method whereby half-way values are always rounded up, meaning, for example, that 89.5% and above will be rounded to 90% and 89.49% and below will be rounded down to 89%.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This course contains ‘must pass’ assessment items.ᅠYou must pass ALL assessment itemsᅠto pass this course overall, i.e. even if your final percentage mark is 55% or higher the individual ‘must pass’ assessment items must have been passed.
Practical / station examinations
Students will be required to perform various tests,ᅠand treatmentsᅠin a series of practical examinations. The emphasis in these examinations is on the EFFECTIVE and SAFE PERFORMANCE of these procedures although examiners will question students about the theory underlying this. Please note, any breach of patient safety during the course of the practical examination will result in an automatic fail of the examination.
Practical assessments will be scheduled on-campus in a face-to-face format.
