Advances student's competency in pain, disability and the biopsychosocial model as it applies to sports and musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

This course provides an opportunity for the graduate physiotherapist to advance their understanding of pain, disability and the biopsychosocial model as it applies to sports and musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

Assumed background

Be a qualified physiotherapists with a minimum of 2 years clinicalᅠexperience in the areas of sports and/or musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Describe pain and critically appraise underlying mechanisms.

Describe and demonstrate use of pain and disability measures in assessment and treatment of sports and musculoskeletal injuries.

Task description

Modular tasks that guide you through feedback on your learning occur in each module (4 tasks in total) and are due at the end of each module. These tasks involve both group and individual/personal based submissions. The group work will take the form of two live online debates (10%) and the personal directed task will involve use of the clinical reasoning forms and worksheets based on your selected clinic cases, with relevant reviews of the literature to build an evidence-informed approach to your practice (30%).

Each task contributes the following weight to your final grade:

Module 1: personal directed task - 15%

Module 2: group debate - 5%

Module 3: personal directed task - 15%

Module 4: group debate - 5%

This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Submission guidelines

Personal directed tasks are submitted via Blackboard. Group debates are held live via video conferencing (e.g. Zoom, Teams).

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 14 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Extensions can be requested for the personal directed tasks. Please apply for an extension request and provide evidence of circumstance as soon as it becomes evident that an extension is needed, but no later than the assessment item submission date. Late submission

Task description

Select a patient from your current clinical caseload with pain as a significant feature of their presentation. You will provide a written report of this case study, including a body chart of symptoms, key clinical examination findings, treatment plan/rationale, and clinical reasoning reflection that considers use of evidence and application of critical reasoning. Further details will be provided on Blackboard. The case study will form the basis of the end of semester viva voce.

Task description

You will participate in an online panel oral exam (Viva Voce) with questioning and reflection about the PHTY7932 end of semester written assignment. This will be undertaken approximately one week following submission of the written assignment and will involve a virtual discussion with a panel of experts.

The viva seeks to explore your understanding of the topic and establish your ability to apply knowledge from the course in a practical sense. You will be expected to support your decisions with reference to the relevant literature and course material.

In the viva, you will first outline key aspects of your case and your reflections on your performance in the first 5 minutes, which will be followed by 10 minutes of question/answer discussion.

The viva will be conducted online (e.g. Zoom or Teams), and you will have an opportunity to select a time within the scheduled exam period.

The marking criteria/rubric and schedule will be available on Blackboard.

4 (Pass) 60 - 69

Demonstrated evidence of functional achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: A cumulative percentage from all assessment of 60 - 69%ᅠ and ᅠhas passed the 'must pass' assessment items as noted above.

5 (Credit) 70 - 79

Additional course grading information

Final marks falling between whole percentages will be rounded to the nearest whole percentage. Tie-breaking will be conducted using the round half up method whereby half-way values are always rounded up, meaning, for example, that 89.5% and above will be rounded to 90% and 89.49% and below will be rounded down to 89%.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This course contains ‘must pass’ assessment items, as follows: End of Semester Written Assignment, End of Semester Viva Voce. You must pass these items to pass this course overall, i.e. even if your final percentage mark is 60% or higher, the individual ‘must pass’ assessment items must have been passed.
