Advances student's clinical reasoning skills and knowledge in the fields of biological and medical sciences relevant to musculoskeletal sports physiotherapists.

This course provides an opportunity for the graduate physiotherapist to advance their clinical reasoning skills in the areas of musculoskeletal and sports physiotherapy. There is a strong emphasis on the critical appraisal of current evidence-based practice within the context of the biomedical model. This will include analysis of the normal structure and function of the musculoskeletal system and integration of this knowledge for an improved understanding of the latest evidence practice in assessment and treatment.

Task description

Modular tasks that guide you through feedback on your learning occur in each module and are due at the end of each module, with the final grade being apportioned 5% (Module 1: Group Debate), 10% (Module 2: Personal Directed Task), 5% (Module 3: Group Debate), & 10% (Module 4: Personal Directed Task) across the semester.

These tasks involve both group and individual/personal based submissions. The group work will take the form of two debates (10%) and the personal directed task will involve use of the clinical reasoning forms and worksheets based on your selected clinical cases - with relevant reviews of the literature to build an evidence informed approach to your practice (20%).

This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Submission guidelines

Personal directed tasks are submitted via Blackboard. Group debates are held live via video conferencing (e.g. Zoom, Teams).

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 14 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Extensions can be requested for the personal directed tasks. Please apply for an extension request via my.UQ > my.UQ Dashboard > my. Requests and provide evidence of circumstance, as soon as it becomes evident that an extension is needed, but no later than the assessment item submission date. Further information regarding what constitutes an acceptable reason for an extension is listed on the my.UQ website: Applying for an extension - my.UQ - University of Queensland

Late submission

A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

The late submission penalty will only apply to the personal directed tasks.

Task description

This assignment requires students to select a musculoskeletal condition (from a list of topics). Students will construct a conference poster for their chosen condition (10%) and write a 1000-word summary (journal editorial) of the relevant research surrounding the evidence-based management of the condition (15%).

Following submission and assessment, these posters will be posted in the Virtual Learning Space, to form the basis of an ongoing clinical resource to be utilised by the student cohort in informing their future practice.

This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Task description

Students will be required to provide a written report of a case study based on a challenging patient that they have treated this year.

The report will include a body chart of symptoms and salient clinical exam findings, as well as an outline and discussion of the patho-anatomical and patho-mechanical basis for their specific presentation, and clinical reasoning behind the assessment and chosen treatment / management.
