Advances student's knowledge of biological and behavioural sciences relevant to sports physiotherapy practice.

This course builds on the advanced knowledge developed through the learning in Part A of the program (PHTY7931, PHTY7932, PHTY7933 and PHTY7934). A series of problem-based/case-scenario learning and assignment work will be undertaken to further develop ᅠthe students' understanding of the relevant biological and behavioural sciences underpinning sports and exercise physiotherapy practice, and the interdisciplinary management of athletes with musculoskeletal/sports injuries/conditions. The problem-based learning tasks will allow students the opportunity to reflect and integrate knowledge, skills and clinical reasoning into advanced physiotherapy practice.ᅠ

Task description

There will be 5 problem-based/case-scenario learning activities in this course. For each of the problem-based/case-scenario learning activities, you will be given a case scenario to work on as a group over a 2-week period. A tutor will facilitate your group learning. You will then present your scenario as a group to a panel of experts on the following dates:

PBL 1 - August 9th

PBL 2 - August 23rd

PBL 3 - September 6th

PBL 4 - September 27th

PBL 5 - October 11th

Following the problem-based learning group presentation there will be an VIVA Voce (oral exam). This exam will be at least 2 days after the presentation, during which time you will reflect upon your learning, and your clinical practice. For the VIVA Voce you will receive 10 minutes perusal time and then a 10-minute oral exam. There will be 1 VIVA Voce for each of the 5 problem-based/case-scenarios, with each VIVA Voce worth 15%. The VIVA Voce are scheduled on the following dates:

PBL 1 - August 12th

PBL 2 - August 26th

PBL 3 - September 16th

PBL 4 - September 30th

PBL 5 - October 14th

You must achieve a passing grade in the average of the 5 VIVA Voce (60% of higher) to pass the course.

This assessment task is to be completed in-person. The use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of Generative AI may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Hurdle requirements

Task description

Students will deliver an individual oral presentation at a Sports Physiotherapy Conference Day at the end of semester. The conference will be open to the wider physiotherapy profession. The student will collaborate with the co-ordination team to select a conference topic to present.

The presentation should be evidence-based and present a thorough literature search relating to a topic. While students may use coursework notes to guide them in the content to be developed, they must examine the literature on which the topic material is based and use these primary sources in their presentation. All literature needs to be evaluated and critiqued so that the student's understanding of the relative strength of the literature is clear to the audience and assessors.

It is imperative that the material is presented in an engaging manner that utilizes contemporary presentation methods and tools. These include fluent and confident verbal expression; clarity, volume and rate of speaking; and eye contact with the audience. The presentation should not be read, and should be delivered with high audience engagement.

This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
