Aims and outcomes
To develop students’ knowledge and clinical reasoning skills surrounding the assessment and treatment of pain and musculoskeletal and sports injuries and conditions.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
LO1.
Demonstrate an understanding of evidence-informed practice and advanced clinical reasoning in musculoskeletal and sports and exercise physiotherapy.
LO2.
Understand different types of pain and underlying mechanisms.
LO3.
Describe and demonstrate the use of patient-reported and clinical outcome measures of pain, function and disability in the assessment and treatment of sports and musculoskeletal injuries.
LO4.
Demonstrate an in depth understanding and awareness of person-centred care/practice.
LO5.
Demonstrate an in depth understanding of when a client should be referred to other health care professionals.

Task description
Students are required to analyse one of four cases, and provide a case formulation exploring the different biological, psychological and social contributors to the patient's pain presentation. Students must then provide an analysis of this case formulation and planned assessments from this. They will then design a management plan based on their case formulation and projected assessment findings.

Task description
Students will select a spinal condition (from a list of topics), and present a 5-minute presentation that demonstrates their understanding of the relevant research surrounding the evidence-based management of the condition.
Presentations will be pre-recorded by students, using the powerpoint slide template provided.

Task description
Students will be required to provide a written report of a case study based on a challenging patient with an upper or lower limb condition that they have treated this year.
The report will include a body chart of symptoms and key clinical exam findings, as well as an outline and discussion of the patho-mechanical basis for their specific presentation, and clinical reasoning behind the assessment and chosen treatment / management.

Additional course grading information
Final marks falling between whole percentages will be rounded to the nearest whole percentage. Tie-breaking will be conducted using the round half up method whereby half-way values are always rounded up, meaning, for example, that 89.5% and above will be rounded to 90% and 89.49% and below will be rounded down to 89%.
