Aims and outcomes

To advances students’ clinical reasoning and understanding of injury management, surveillance and prevention in a clinical sports and exercise physiotherapy environment

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

LO1.

Understand the roles and contributions of multi-disciplinary health and sport professionals in maintaining well-being and preventing and managing injuries in sports teams and athletes. 

LO2.

Develop accurate and comprehensive recording skills and monitoring systems to ensure safe and effective implementation of sports physiotherapy.

LO3.

Critically analyse and reflect on injury surveillance data in relation to literature and requirements of sport. 

LO4.

Critically analyse and reflect on injury data and risk factors in relation to pre-participation screening and injury prevention programs in sport.

Task description

Students are required to evidence completion of their Sports Physiotherapy Coverage and Preparatory Activities. They must submit the following documents:

·       A sports coverage verification statement.

·       The certificate of completion of the online Sport Integrity Australia courses, First Aid, CPR and Spinal Management courses.

This assessment item is marked as Pass/Fail and must be passed (completed) for students to pass the course.

Task description

Throughout their sports physiotherapy coverage, students will keep written case notes (log) of athletes assessed and treated. Based on the case notes of injuries seen during the clinical sports physiotherapy coverage, students will prepare an injury surveillance report.

This assessment has a 1500-word limit (excluding one table of your injury surveillance observations, the Appendix of your injury log, and the reference list at the end of the report [in-text references are included in the word limit]).

Students will use the literature/evidence and their injury surveillance data from their clinical sports physiotherapy coverage to write a report on managing injury risk for the sport they worked with.

This assessment has a 1500-word limit (excluding references).

Task description

Part 1: Sports Physiotherapy Clinical Placement statement

Students are required to write a Sports Physiotherapy Clinical Placement statement outlining the hours completed during their elite/sub-elite sports physiotherapy clinical placement and what the experience involved. The statement should not exceed 200 words and must be signed by the student and the Sports and Exercise Physiotherapist.

 

Part 2: Self-reflection

Students will write a self-reflection on their experience and learnings undertaking the elite/sub-elite sports physiotherapy clinical placement.

The self-reflection has a 500-word limit.

2 (Fail) 35 - 49

Minimal evidence of achievement of course learning outcomes.

3 (Marginal Fail) 50 - 59

Demonstrated evidence of developing achievement of course learning outcomes

Course grade description: A cumulative percentage from all assessment of 50 - 59%. A grade of 3 will be awarded to a student who achieves a final mark of 60% or higher but who does not pass the must pass assessment items noted below.

4 (Pass) 60 - 69

Demonstrated evidence of functional achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: A cumulative percentage from all assessment of 60 - 69% and has passed the 'must pass' assessment items noted below.

5 (Credit) 70 - 79

Demonstrated evidence of proficient achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: A cumulative percentage from all assessment of 70 - 79% and has passed the 'must pass' assessment items noted below.

6 (Distinction) 80 - 89

Demonstrated evidence of advanced achievement of course learning outcomes.

7 (High Distinction) 90 - 100

Demonstrated evidence of exceptional achievement of course learning outcomes.

Additional course grading information

Final marks falling between whole percentages will be rounded to the nearest whole percentage. Tie-breaking will be conducted using the round half up method whereby half-way values are always rounded up, meaning, for example, that 89.5% and above will be rounded to 90% and 89.49% and below will be rounded down to 89%.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This course contains ‘must pass’ assessment items, as follows: a passing grade must be achieved for the Evidence of Completion of Sports Physiotherapy Coverage and Tasks (Pass/Fail assessment). You must pass these items to pass this course overall, i.e. even if your final percentage mark is 60% or higher, the ‘must pass’ assessment item must have been passed.

Resubmission/Resit of Assessment Items

The School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences supports the concept of resubmission or resitting of failed assessment items in specific and defined circumstances. In this course, there are no items eligible for consideration of theᅠresubmission/resit option.

Use of Generative AI in Student Placements 

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (e.g., ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot) are increasingly used in society. In terms of clinical placements, students are not permitted to use AI unless explicitly indicated by the provider that this use is permitted, and the parameters of use are clear. If these are not explicit, students are expected to consult with their practice educators before implementation to determine the acceptability of generative AI use and ensure that any potential risks associated with the intended use are addressed. AI is not a replacement of, or substitute for, professional reasoning or clinical skills. Human oversight is essential in its use, and to employ generative AI effectively and responsibly, students must understand how AI works, including its functions, data storage methods, and its impact on adherence to professional codes of conduct. 

If used on placement, students are responsible for any outputs generated by AI, such as clinical notes and reports, and will be held accountable for the actions of any AI that is used in clinical practice. This responsibility includes ensuring adherence to the relevant profession's code of conduct and ethical standards. Transparency about generative AI use is essential in placement environments. Students must follow the relevant policies and procedures of their placement provider. Students are reminded that they need to demonstrate their ability to meet the inherent requirements of the relevant profession, operate within its scope of practice, and ensure that client/patient privacy and confidentiality are maintained at all times. Under no circumstances should identifiable clinical information be uploaded to open or external AI platforms, as it is unethical and irresponsible. 

Deferred exams

Students may be eligible for a deferred exam if there are exceptional or unavoidable circumstances, or as a one-off discretionary request. Deferred exam requests should be submitted as soon as possible, and no later than five calendar days after the date of the original exam.

Sports Physiotherapy Coverage

Students provide clinical sports physiotherapy coverage for a sports team/club of their choice through a season, part of a season, or series of events to accumulate 45-50 hours of sports physiotherapy coverage. 

* The total hours between the Sports Physiotherapy Coverage and Elite/Sub-elite Sports Physiotherapy Clinical Placement must equal at least 70 hours.

Students work with/observe a Sports and Exercise Physiotherapist who is providing sports physiotherapy services to an elite/sub-elite sporting club/team or elite/sub-elite athletes to accumulate 25-30 hours.

* The total hours between the Sports Physiotherapy Coverage and Elite/Sub-elite Sports Physiotherapy Clinical Placement must equal at least 70 hours.
