Physiological responses, mechanisms and adaptations in response to exercise and training. Physiological principles applied to evaluation and improvement of physical performance. Laboratory and field tests for the assessment of physical fitness and performance. Introduction to biophysical bases of human movement with specific focus upon growth & development of musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory & neural systems in response to physical activity. This course had the previous code of HMST2730 which can be viewed in the archived area within the Course and Program site http://www.uq.edu.au/study/archive/index.html
This course will examine the physiological responses and mechanisms to exercise and physical activity. It will require students to apply core physiology knowledge in the study of metabolic, cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine and neuromuscular responses to exercise and physical activity. In addition, adaptations to exercise and physical activity as a result of training will be described. The course will provide foundation knowledge in physiology and how it relates to sport (e.g., performance) and physical activity undertaken for health.

Aims and outcomes
To examine the physiological responses, mechanisms and adaptations to exercise and training. Specifically, study of metabolic, cardiovascular, and endocrine responses and adaptations to physical activity will be undertaken. Consideration will be given to factors that influence exercise performance, such as nutritional and environmental factors. The course includes a focus on application of physiological principles to training for sports and health-related fitness.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
LO1.
apply relevant physiological principles in order to give well-informed answers to questions about exercise and physiological performance
LO2.
apply physiological principles and techniques to the assessment and training of individuals of varying age and sexes
LO3.
apply physiological principles and techniques to the study of sport and exercise performance, and to the development of physical activity programs for individuals and groups of all ages and levels.
LO4.
apply physiological principles to understand the role of physical activity in disease prevention and health-related exercise prescription
LO5.
recognise appropriate laboratory and field tests for the assessment of the various components of physical fitness and performance
LO6.
work effectively within a student team to develop communication and process management skills, and facilitate peer-assisted collaborative learning

Task description
Each of the 5 practicals will involve an online concept check quiz at the end of the practical learning activities.
Use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT)
This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT). Students are advised that the use of AI or MT technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
Submission guidelines
To be completed in-person as an online quiz via the course ULTRA site.
Deferral or extension
You cannot defer or apply for an extension for this assessment.
Students are permitted to miss zero practicals for PHYL2730 without receiving approval as there is assessment completed in the practical sessions.
If you are unable to attend for medical or extenuating circumstances, you are required to complete an absentee form and email the form as soon as possible to the Practical Coordinator, Joshua Schnebele (j.schnebele@uq.edu.au) but no later than two (2) calendar days after the date of the original class was held.
Students with an approved absence will be re-assigned to another practical in the same two-week cycle.
Students with an approved absence who cannot be re-assigned to another practical in the same two-week cycle, must contact the Practical Coordinator to organise access material and access to the relevant concept check quiz.
Failure to attend a practical session without an approved absence and failure to attend an approved make-up session will result in a grade of zero (0%) for that weeks Concept Check Quiz.
Late submission
You will receive a mark of 0 if this assessment is submitted late.

Task description
Students will work in groups of 3-4 to write a report based on a 'hot topic' in exercise physiology. Students will critically evaluate and discuss an artificial intelligence (AI) generated report for the hot topic.
Students will select a hot topic from a list provided and, using recommended prompts, use a generative AI platform (ChatGPT) to construct a report. Students will be required to critically evaluate the text produced and provide evidence to support and/or refute the key points of the AI generated report based on high-quality evidence from primary sources and/or Grade A evidence. Students will provide an annotated bibliography.
The group written report and annotated bibliography is worth 15%- each group member will get the same mark /15%
Students will also undertake a peer assessment which is worth 5%- group members will get individual scores based on peer assessment /5%
Use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT)
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Translation (MT) are emerging tools that may support students in completing this assessment task. Students may appropriately use AI and/or MT in completing this assessment task. Students must clearly reference any use of AI or MT in each instance.
A failure to reference generative AI or MT use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
Submission guidelines
Submit via the turn-it-in link on ULTRA
Deferral or extension
You may be able to apply for an extension.
The maximum extension allowed is 28 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.
Extensions for group work assessment may be available and will require a single request submitted with agreement from at least 50% of the members of the group, and recognition of potential impacts on the other group members. Download and complete the form below, and attach this form to your extension request: Extension of Group Assessment - Group Member Acknowledgement (PDF, 144.9 KB)
Student Access Plans for an individual student do not guarantee an extension for the assessment item. Extension Verification Letters cannot be used for group-based assessments and activities.
Dysfunctional group dynamics, poor performance by individual group members, or illness or other issues of a group member are generally not considered sufficient grounds for an extension on submission of a group assessment item. These issues should be actively managed by the group and the Course Coordinator as appropriate, during semester.
Late submission
A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.
