This course provides the opportunity for students to learn in a workplace environment. Students are responsible for finding and arranging a professional work placement, subject to Planning Program approval, that provides meaningful work experience in the planning profession. The course will require attendance, participation, observation, critical reflection, and report writing on workplace activities and experiences. The emphasis of critical reflection and report writing will be on identifying and describing aspects of professional relevance incorporating: planning practice; collaboration and teamwork; work place health and safety; professional ethics; and other aspects of the work place experience. Information about enrolling in a placement course, including registering your interest and application deadlines, can be found here: https://www.eait.uq.edu.au/employability/placements-and-work-experience

In this course students complete a supervised placement in a private, government, non-government, university or other workplace that provides professional and technical services to the planning, infrastructure, environment, community and development sectors. The Planning Industry Placement is an elective course for students in the Bachelor of Regional and Town Planning (BRTP) and requires a minimum of 200 hours of workplace experience in the academic term for which the student is enrolled.

The responsibility for seeking and securing an approved placement rests solely with the student seeking placement. To undertake a placement, the BRTP student should be in the 4th year of the degree program.

The placement may be undertaken with any recognised planning-related organisation in Australia or internationally. However, an international placementᅠcannot be undertaken in locations where a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) Travel Advisory of "Reconsider your need to travel", or higher,ᅠis in place.ᅠEnrolment will only be permitted with approval of the Placement course coordinator following the student submission of all appropriate consent forms.

Steps for Enrolling in PLAN4130

  1. Using your UQ username and password, log in to InPlace to access relevant information and resources.
  2. The Student seeks and finds practicum placement with an organisation willing to supervise the placement. When applying for a placement opportunity, the UQ Careers can provide assistance in the preparation of a cover letter and resume.
  3. The Student consults with PLAN4130 Course Coordinator regarding the suitability and acceptability of the placement. With preliminary approval from the Course Coordinator, the student works with the placement organisation to complete the Student Placement Application which describes the student’s plan for their placement experience. Although the Student Placement Application is completed and signed by the placement organisation, the student is encouraged to work with the organisation to identify meaningful work experiences during the placement. The actual number of work hours that comprise the work placement is negotiated between the organisation and the student for mutual benefit, but must include a minimum of 200 hours in the placement organisation.
  4. The Student Placement Application is submitted via the 'Self-Placement' submission link on InPlace.
  5. For unpaid placements, the Head of School sends a formal placement agreement to the Placement Supervisor outlining the obligations and responsibilities of UQ and the placement organisation.
  6. You are required to complete 5 in 5 OHS Module for EAIT Faculty students. This can be accessed via https://learn.uq.edu.au and is compulsory before enrolment in any placement course offered by ADP.  Instructions can be found on InPlace.
  7. The Student is added to a permissions list allowing them to enrol in PLAN4130 on SI-net.

Note, the final step in the process is enrolment, hence students are encouraged to start seeking a placement well in advance of the start of the semester in which they wish to enrol.

Task description

Assessment Rationale:

Following the Placement Workshop (O Week) students will prepare/refresh a LinkedIn profile and complete a series of activities.

Evidence indicates that LinkedIn is an industry-standard social network that allow users to establish a personal brand and digital resume, identify career opportunities, and connect with other professionals in the field. This is an individual assessment.

This is a three-part assessment:

Part 1: LinkedIn Profile and Post

Part 2: Mindmap of industry stakeholders, interests and potential connections

Students should draw upon workshop discussions and course resources to build out the mind map.

Part 3: Reflection

Complex/Authentic assessment using AI and/or MT to support learning: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Translation (MT) are emerging tools that may support students in completing this assessment task. Students may appropriately use AI and/or MT in completing this assessment task. Students must clearly reference any use of AI or MT in each instance.

A failure to reference generative AI or MT use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Submission guidelines

The School of Architecture, Design and Planning uses Blackboard and Turnitin for assessment submission. Turnitin is accessed through the course Blackboard site. Turnitin also checks for plagiarism or instances where the original work of others is not appropriately acknowledged.

Students are advised to commence assignment uploads with sufficient amount of time (consider possible technical problems with computers, internet speed, etc). After successfully submitting an assignment through Turnitin, a ‘Submission Complete!’ screen will be displayed. It is the student’s responsibility to check assignment preview and confirm successful submission. If the ‘Submission Complete!’ screen isn’t displayed, the student should regard the submission as unsuccessful. Students should download a copy of the digital receipt as proof they have submitted the assignment. Students who are experiencing upload issues must advise the Course Coordinator immediately by email and should include screenshots and a copy of the assessment for submission.

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 28 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

If a student wishes to apply for an extension, they must apply online on or before the assignment due date. When possible, it is suggested that requests are submitted 2 business days prior to the submission due date for the assignment to allow processing time. Students with outstanding applications for extensions are advised to submit their assessment by the original due date, irrespective of whether the work is complete, so that what has been done can be graded.

Late submission

The late penalty for this assessment item will be calculated as follows:

First 1-hour block - initial 1 hour grace period no penalty.

Second 1-hour block - An penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark allocated for the assessment item will be deducted

Third 1-hour block - An additional penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark allocated for the assessment item will be deducted. (adding up to a total penalty of 20% of the maximum possible mark)

Any submissions received after three hours will not receive any marks unless an extension has been approved. Each one-hour block is recorded from the time the submission is due.

Additional course grading information

Identity verified assessment with a hurdle (IVAH)

To meet assessment validity and integrity obligations, this course includes at least one piece of individual Identity Verified Assessment with a Hurdle (IVAH) that is unambiguously completed by that student, and in which a minimum level of achievement is reached. IVAH assessment item(s) contribute at least 30% towards the final grade. Examples of IVAH items include any activity in which a student’s individual performance is directly monitored, such as performances, fieldwork, oral assessment (including design critiques), design studio project work and invigilated exams. In order to pass this course students must achieve a minimum grade for the IVAH designated assessment item(s) as stated in the Assessment Task Description in the ECP.

Industry Placement Courses

Placement Courses require the cumulative integration of critical reflection and feedback on experiences and skills developed over time during the completion of 200 hours of professional practice. To meet assessment validity and integrity obligations in Placement Courses, students must regularly present and discuss their work with staff over the course of scheduled learning activities including structured activities, individual and group consultations, and presentations. Students are expected to complete the Learning Contract and ensure the completion of two Placement Supervisor Reports (see details listed in Other section) as this is evidence their work has been monitored and reviewed. If a student is not able to provide evidence of assessment authorship to the satisfaction of the course coordinator a maximum grade of 3 will be awarded.

Supplementary assessment

Supplementary assessment is not available for some items in this course.

Additional assessment information
