This course provides the opportunity for students to learn in a workplace environment. Students are responsible for finding and arranging a professional work placement, subject to Planning Program approval, that provides meaningful work experience in the planning profession. The course will require attendance, participation, observation, critical reflection, and report writing on workplace activities and experiences. The emphasis of critical reflection and report writing will be on identifying and describing aspects of professional relevance incorporating: planning practice; collaboration and teamwork; work place health and safety; professional ethics; and other aspects of the work place experience. Information about enrolling in a placement course, including registering your interest and application deadlines, can be found here: https://www.eait.uq.edu.au/employability/placements-and-work-experience

In this course students complete a supervised placement in a private, government, non-government, university or other workplace that provides professional and technical services to the planning, infrastructure, environment, community and development sectors. The Planning Industry Placement is an elective course for students in the Master of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) and requires a minimum of 200 hours of workplace experience in the academic term for which the student is enrolled. The responsibility for seeking and securing an approved placement rests solely with the student seeking placement. To undertake a placement, the MURP student should be in their final year of the degree program.

The placement may be undertaken with any recognised planning-related organisation in Australia or internationally. All international placement requests will require additional verification checks and are subject to approval at the discretion of the Associate Dean (Academic). However, an international placement cannot be undertaken in locations where a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) Travel Advisory of "Reconsider your need to travel", or higher, is in place.ᅠEnrolment will only be permitted with approval of the Placement course coordinator following the student submission of all appropriate consent forms.

Steps for Enrolling in PLAN7130

  1. Using yourᅠUQ username and password, log in toᅠInPlace to access relevant information and resources.ᅠ
  2. The Student seeks and finds practicum placement with an organisation willing to supervise the placement. When applying for a placement opportunity, theᅠUQ Careersᅠcan provide assistance in the preparation of a cover letter and resume.ᅠ
  3. The Student consults with PLAN7130 Course Coordinator regarding the suitability and acceptability of the placement.ᅠWith preliminary approval from the Course Coordinator, the student works with the placement organisation to complete the Student Placement Application which describes the student’s plan for their placement experience.ᅠAlthough the Student Placement Applicationᅠis completed and signed by the placement organisation, the student is encouraged to work with the organisation to identify meaningful work experiences during the placement.ᅠThe actual number of work hours that comprise the work placement is negotiated between the organisation and the student for mutual benefit, but must include a minimum of 200 hours in the placement organisation.ᅠ
  4. The Student Placement Applicationᅠis submitted viaᅠthe 'Self-Placement' submission link on InPlace.ᅠ
  5. For unpaid placements, the Head of School sends a formal placement agreement to the Placement Supervisor outlining the obligations and responsibilities of UQ and the placement organisation.
  6. You are required to complete 5 in 5 OHS Moduleᅠfor EAIT Faculty students. This can be accessed via https://learn.uq.edu.auᅠand is compulsory before enrolment in any placement course offered by ADP.ᅠInstructions can be found onᅠInPlace.
  7. The Student is added to a permissions list, allowing them to enrol in PLAN4130 on SI-net.

Note: the final step in the process is enrolment, hence students are encouraged to start seeking a placement well in advance of the start of the semester in which they wish to enrol.
